So Pineville went to Sam Houston last night for a friendly match over the Christmas break. Pineville Boys won 3-0 and the Sam Houston coaches and fans and players were great but I coached in the most peculiar game I've ever heard of. There was a total of 13 yellow cards in the game with probably 11 being totally unecessary. You can imagine how slow the game went with 13 yellows plus probably another 50 whistles blown. This is no exaggeration the game was probably stopped at least every minute. I've had problems with this ref before but never anything like this...ah high school soccer

If there were 13 yellows and 50 other whistles then there sould have been a red card for repeated offenses i dont care who the ref is

If there were 13 yellows and 50 other whistles then there sould have been a red card for repeated offenses i dont care who the ref is Let me play devil's advocate for just a second. Let's say that several players committed reckless tackles, dissented, and failed to respect the required distance. Would you want a referee to disqualify a player not previously booked simply because there were too many yellows already issued? This is why I like HS soccer. The referee had the option of disqualifying any player already carrying a yellow without having the burden of significantly altering the game dynamic. The team does not play short. Any player can leave, but the team still has 11. I will be the first to say that I am a bit more liberal with my use of the yellow card in a HS game for this simple reason.

Really, you get a free dinner from Denny's after 8 in one game?

Sounds like someone's a little sensitive and doesn't have much for a sense of humor. I'd have said "make it Waffle House, we got a deal".
Since this was a non-district game (I think), maybe the assignor was trying to give him a shot at a game to see how he did. I'm guessing the results speak for themselves?

Sad to hear that you are more liberal in high school with yellows becauSe of the "Soft" aspect. That sounds like an offial who is unsure of himself.

Sorry happyjack, I am of the understanding that NFHS has this option to promote replacement and full participation. I do officiate the HS game differently than a USSF game.
ashestoashes - not all fouls hold equal weight. The foul severity, type of foul, location, the player being fouled - there are a ton of aspects to take into account before deciding to book for Persistent Infringement. Perhaps in this case, the referee did not grasp the concept of the trifling foul, perhaps he didn't understand the meaning of game flow. I don't know the guy, I wasn't there. What I do know is that a knowledgeable and aware referee will apply the game to the Rules, not the other way around.
We wish we could send our best out there every game. This is simply not the case. Sad to say that at a last resort, the teams should alter their game to conform to the referee.

I must say, I do not give many yellows at all. If you get a yellow, chances are it was very obvious or you can't keep your mouth shut for dissent.
Many teams don't have deep benches and just because they dont play short a player, doesn't mean the sub is very good. I know many teams who have 10 players who can play, and field the other spot with the best player after that. Not all teams can replace players without a drop off.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with your reasoning concerning your rationale in not giving yellow cards. There are many fouls, etc. that aren't worthy of a red card but certainly need to be punished with a yellow card. Don't give the yellow and you very likely will have to deal with retaliation by the fouled player or his teammate. Give an undeserved red card and it may cause you to lose control of the game because of the unfair punishment. I personally don't think cards should be given or not given based of a team's bench strength. What if one team has numerous good subs and the other team only has scrubs to use as subs. Are you more likely to issue a caution to the team with numerous good subs? What I'm trying to say is that a referee can dig himself a hole real fast when they base a yellow OR red card because of the concern of what subs that may be available or not available to a team.

I'm sure the referee wasn't having a good day with all he felt he had to deal with - so you shouldn't be surprised when you get a yellow from him for a cynical comment like that. Maybe next time you ought to be a bit public about telling your team to keep the contact down and maybe he'll start cutting your team a little slack - or tell your captain to ask the ref to let you play through the small stuff & go from there.
I have had (2) games in my career of over 10 cards, but both involved adult leagues, red cards and a punch or two. I'm not proud of any of that, as I could have done better, but then again when 2 teams go out to play soccer as a secondary diversion on the pitch, with a coach who wont/cant get involved, then you get what you get. Maybe like this ref if I was pickier to start, those games would have gone better. So there is a flip side too (as I'm sure you know).
It may have been that the referee set the bar too low, so you get 50 whistles and 13 yellows. And with a slow game, chances are the pace starts fueling more problems (I don't think your referee subscribed to this position). While I can sympathize with you if this was the case, I was not at your game to armchair it. What I will offer its that you'll probably be able to get more positive response for everyone if you next time try to help improve the situation and the flow of the game, than by being cynical with the referee.
As an aside, we studied the referee in the now famous Portugal-Netherlands 20 card fiasco at an ODP camp I attended, and from the discussions - there were 2 reds early on not issued that helped to fuel that game (one in the box didn't even get a card, and I believe the other was the second yellow of the game to Netherlands). Also, Netherlands was very public about going after Ronaldo in the pre-game media, so nothing should have been a surprise for the Russian center if he had done his homework. So by about the 40th minute of this game all the referee could do was to react to what happened the rest of the way and there you have a card fest.
