Name your Top Div I defenders.... Unfortunately many High School teams are so weak these kids play all over the pitch and never create an identity... Name your stud(s).......

Leah Aultman -- St. Joseph's Academy -- Baylor commitment. Pick your nickname -- The Wall, The Vacuum Cleaner, The Stop Sign, The "No-Go Zone."
Very few forwards will beat her 1 on 1, and even if they do, she'll be back on them in less than 2 seconds to contest.

FINALLY - recognition
> Overall defensive units - Baton Rouge High and Dutchtown High - 2 real good defensive units take your pick (and I don't know their names anyway) but these girls for both of these programs work extremely well together as a defensive unit. If anyone knows the names of the girls for these 2 teams, list them so they get their recognition. I think both of these are viewed as difficult to score on.
> University High has 2 young ladies playing in the center of their defense who are extremely quick and very effective. If anyone knows these 2 young ladies, post'em so they get the recognition they deserve.

oldhattrick, what? How many players were missing for Baton Rouge High when they played in the Carencro Tourney at the beginning of the season? Probably the whole defense right? Lafayette ate them up for I think 7 goals and there were 23 players played against them. Many that won't see action come playoff time. Maybe you just have a different definition of "good defense".

She is the anchor for St Joes D.

When looking at defenses, you need to see how they play against the top teams. In a previous thread, for completeness, we included Byrd and Dutchtown as being tied for 10th. Below is a list of teams with the average goals allowed per game against the top 10 (plus Byrd and Dutchtown). Feel free to add your own team's average against these 12 teams. Team | Allowed | # Games | Average | Mount Carmel | 5 | 12 | 0.42 | Lafayette | 4 | 6 | 0.67 | St. Thomas More | 7 | 9 | 0.78 | Dominican | 9 | 9 | 1.00 | Mandeville | 13 | 11 | 1.18 | Fountainebleau | 13 | 11 | 1.18 | St. Scholastica | 9 | 7 | 1.29 | West Monroe | 11 | 6 | 1.83 | Northshore | 17 | 7 | 2.43 | Byrd | 17 | 7 | 2.43 | Dutchtown | 16 | 5 | 3.20 | St. Joseph's | 13 | 4 | 3.25 |

Sorry if my appreciation lacks your opinion.

It is interesting how this thread and the "missing a player affects ranking" thread come together.
I really like archangel's chart of stats (mostly because I am a math teacher and the information is handy and I did not have to compile it) but of the goals scored against SJA in the 4 games, 9 of them were scored in the games where Leah Aultman was not playing.
Maybe missing a key player does make a difference. I will never coach to that. It is my job to try to coach up my younger players, but it is never the less hard to make up for a senior who is going to play in the Big 12 next year.
Do you think other coaches would not change their opinion of SJA if Leah were not able to play in the playoffs, regardless of the record?

Archangel, great post, correction to Byrd's numbers; it is the same as Northshore, 17 in seven games against all the listed teams equals 2.43.

Of the nine goals that Dominican has given up against top 10 teams, 6 were against SSA on the second game of the season and Dominican did not have their starting back line playing yet. 2 Freshman were playing until the starters came back. So 3 goals in the other 8 games seems to be a strong defense.

The Baton Rouge defense consists of the following players - Rachael Bourgeois - (sophomore sweeper (absent from Laffayette game)), Maegan Guillory (freshman), Emily Daigle (freshman), Bernadette St. Amand (sophomore) I believe was also absent for Laffy game) - Madeline Bush (freshman) and Adrienne Stephens (freshman) see some action from the bench. Put Kayla Ashford in front of them as a more defensive midfielder and you have the basis of their defense. Keep in mind that the tournament with Laffayette was the first high school action for many of these players. I still think Laffayette is the better team, but I'd expect a slightly tighter game at this point in the season. This defense held SJA to one goal, one goal to Dutchtown on a PK, and held Mount carmel to 2 goals. Keeper Abbey Segura takes care of nearly anything that gets through this lineup.
I'd also like to throw Denham Springs sweeper into this discussion. I don't know her name, but I was impressed with how she played the ball in the air.

MCA defense is good (and it is) but the real reason their goals against is .42 is the possession in the mid-field. That 3 back formation will hurt them when a quality attack stacks the forwards (on top not side to side) lets them run diagonals and ushers the attack with long crossing balls to the back side. the off defender gets tucked inside to far- if they are not careful someone will SSA them in the payoffs again. It will take speed but more important, unselfish play...... Dominican & Lafayette survive because of their defense... they are under constant pressure but always seem to survive. Tons of pressure- real defense..

And let's not forget the keepers. A few great saves could make a big difference in a team's record and ranking.

Melinda Newman at Covington is an excellent defender. Unfortunately, she has nine speed bumps in front of her and a suspect keeper behind her. These aren't good cominations when facing Mandeville, SSA, Fontainebleau, and Northshore twice each. She may have torn a ligament against MHS on Monday. The MHS players were VERY classy after the match going to the CHS bench area to shake her hand. I am not saying she is the best defender or anything silly, but she has been excellent, especially considering the circumstances.

Forgive me for this one, but given recent censoring on this board and complaints by some folks, the NUMBER ONE defender is known as "The Whistle". Stops play ever time... In retrospect, would make a great nickname for a shutdown defender. aliceshoe1, that is perfect - we have a title now - "The Whistle Awards" - Best defenders in the state
