After 6min half, CR blowing whistle for teams to return already! 51F, wet & cold!
2nd half starts at 8:16pm & NHS kicks off sending deep into box from the get go, NHS #2 collecting opp in box but not controlling well so shot along left side in box was more a push of a shot toward gk on near post easy collect.
A bit later SPS #7 w/shot along edge of box goes quite high of cross bar.
1-1 in 2nd half.

M, how's the surface holding up? Is the ball getting hung up in the slop? Interesting to see how SPS handles this since they normally play on FieldTurf.

Just over 35min left in half, SPS has throwin from left that bounces around around along top of box, cleared away a bit by NHS #11 who's having a good defensive game I've noticed so far, but SPS regains & sends in scrum & eventually SPS (?) along far post puts away easy goal in traffic. Don't know what AR hand signal means when he lifts up one arm straight in air & flag straight out. Guess it doesn't matter b/c CR ignores his several attempts at that hand motion.
SPS 2-1 NHS in 2nd half.

M, how's the surface holding up? Is the ball getting hung up in the slop? Interesting to see how SPS handles this since they normally play on FieldTurf. Ball seems like a dead weight, mostly propelled forward into motion by kicks moreso than momentum. Everybody is having trouble w/footing out there to some degree, slipping & sliding around a bit.

NHS #17 w/great opp in box, but taken down. CR not having it, allowing play on.
A bit later NHS #17 w/another opp cranking hard shot that goes just high of cross bar a bit.
Soon NHS gets throwin into box giving NHS great opps & SPS a fit, shot eventually by NHS #(?) that would've gone in due to out of position gk, but SPS #20 "saves" the day by heading away @ end line of goal!

Another opp for NHS in box but passing not so hot due to muddy sloppy mess. Pass back out to top of box goes awry.
Soon SPS w/another good opp, handling possession/control a bit better. SPS #20 sprinting along left side into box, cranks sweet crossing shot to far post, but sprinting SPS #10 can't get to it in time for easy tap in! Goal kick.
SPS 2-1 NHS 2nd half!

NHS w/perhaps their best organized opp so far w/NHS #? pressing into top of box w/2 SPS defenders collapsing on him, feeds sweet cross to left to sprinting NHS #17 whose great shot opp 1v1 vs gk around 7yd goes just over crossbar!
Another opp for NHS. Then another opp or two for SPS, dangerous in box, seemingly w/all time in world, eventually cleared out. A shot by SPS in box, diving NHS gk save!
The shot opps are relentless, more of them by SPS!
SPS 2-1 NHS w/13 to go!

NHS student fans shirtless & painted blue, screaming in support!
NHS fans getting upset w/what they think is partiality of CR. Example: SPS presses hard in box & shoulder checks NHS defender hard, falling to ground. Ball eventually cleared but once again NHS defender who had just fallen ran up to play & shoulder checked SPS player. CR calls foul but this time doesn't issue retaliation YC to NHS, so they should be happy, I guess...

SPS w/opp along left that gets gk out of position, but SPS shot gets cleared luckily for NHS by defender!
A bit later, another near point blank shot by SPS saved deflect by gk!
7min left, SPS #15 gets sloppy goal off shot from left that barely crosses goal line in slow mo to far post area, gk quickly trying to collect it before CR notices it crosses line.
SPS 3-1 NHS

My hands are cold & shaking. I was having trouble keeping up w/the insanity in the last 10+ min. YCs, elbow shot by NHS #18 football player defender to face of SPS player (surprised no bloody lip face there!), no eject for that, at least 2 or so point blank shots by NHS #17 from left side in waning minutes, one over crossbar, another great save by SPS gk! I couldn't keep up. CR is apparently an MLS ref, and I'd be embarrassed way he managed game. Brasilboy31 will have to try to give an objective more accurate recap of last 10 min b/c again, so much happened, from NHS great shot opps, saves/clears by SPS, YC, no call hard retaliation fouls, etc.! NHS played well against a beautiful-to-watch, great passing, well organized, good communicating, good use of wideness of pitch SPS squad. NHS fought valiantly as underdog & should hold heads high (and get a control on their reactionary emotions)! Final district 1/15/13: St. Paul's 3 northshore 2

M unit, you want Brasilboy to give his objective recap after he spent 80 plus minutes in it? I'm a fan of his, but it sounds funny the way it is written.

First, I would like to say that this was a great game to play in and one I will always remember. The atmosphere of the Northshore students, parents and fans provided great support and even some funny commentary throughout the game. Second, the game was very back and forth with momentum seeming to switch quite often between the two sides. I can say that I agree with MUnit that SPS had "great passing, was well organized, and good use of our small pitch", however NHS produced just as much as them tonight. Their counter game was not long ball, however, it was DIRECT. We were able to find our high target forwards (myself and #4 most of the game) and work off each other to create 1v1's and good shot opportunities. The sophomore SPS GK Colin had an outstanding game and I commend him for so. Many of my own shots were fingertip saved and/or pushed over the bar... 1-2 inches further right or left and I think they could have been in. Third, after the game I learned this referee was an "old MLS". After playing in the game and I think MUnit can validate, we can understand why he is an "old MLS" referee and not currently still up there. He lost management of the game and greatly disrupted the great flow and movement that the game had throughout the last 10-15 mins. In no way will I say this game was won or lost by this referee and his crew, however, I would like to point out a few things. 1) St. Paul's second goal early in the second half was in the scrum of players in front of the goal and was cleared out to a player standing away from the group. The player on the back post easily places it into the net. However, AR's flag was up (in what is symbolic of an offside call) and the center referee WAVES HIM DOWN. Now as a referee myself, I know you have to put a lot of faith in my AR's, but before I would wave down a goal scoring play that could have been offside, I would go consult with him - BUT, that did not happen. Just got word from our head coach that center ref apologized after the game to him for waving call down and should have consulted with the referee who did in fact have offside called on the SPS player who scored I guess that is just the way things happen sometime... 2) On SPS's third goal late in the second half, the SPS player made a great play on the ball, worked it down to the box and a few moves later pulls of a shot that sneaks through and seems to slow mo roll from in front of goal and cross the line. Not trying to take anything away from the chance and shot (and can't validate whether it cross or not seeming as I was by the half-line), but our AR's were two twin brother that looked to be in their late 60's or early 70's (and not in the best of shape). The AR on that side was at the top of the 18 box area still tracking back as this was occurring! The ball was so close to the line (MUnit can validate) that how can you make that call 18 yards off the goal line? The ONLY way you can be 100% sure it crossed the whole line is by being on the line. Again, just stating two instances that were big factors in the game, but nonetheless NHS still had the opportunities and couldn't quite get the bounce. Fourth, as captain of my team, I would like to apologize for some of our players "reactionary emotions" as MUnit called them. Some probably came out of anger, some seemed as payback for what may have been a missed call for the referee, but I hope that everyone on SPS is okay. The field conditions provided quite a unique surface to play on and I believe that this attributed to some of the falls and actions of players on the field. Fifth, the last 10 mins or so, as MUnit stated, there was a lot of action. After the SPS third goal to make it 3-1, we quickly countered off the kickoff and #1 Joe Pedreria took a beautiful 30ish yard out shot that sailed into the upper 90! After that, the ball was really down on NHS' attacking half for the last 6/7 mins. We pushed hard and created a few more opportunities. One was crossed into box by NHS #4 Blake Hebert, headed on frame and looked to be going in goal, only to be cleared out with a bicycle (goal-saving) kick by SPS #3. Following the clear out, I was played a ball into the corner and beat a defender to the goal line where I played it back to #11 JB Bonura who hammered one from about 8 yds out on frame that hits off a SPS player out for a corner kick... another goal-saving stop. All in all, the last 10 mins created much excitement and suspense, but the #5 ranked SPS held strong and kept their cool and preserved a 3-2 win. Sixth, cheerio... I understand what you may have heard about the game and the tackle/hit by #18 towards the end of the game, but HE did not go to the student section and get them to cheer - THEY did that on their own. They are high school students that got riled up after a big hit (clearly a foul). Again, I apologize for the way he may have expressed his emotions and I hope SPS #15 (?) is okay, but he did not get them to cheer so let's clear that up right now. Again, congratulations to SPS on a well-deserved and well-fought win. They are quite deserving of their top 5 ranking and have a very talented squad that Coach Moser always seems to have ready to play. I must say, that my squad showed a lot of heart out there on the field tonight and I know great things are in store for us as we reach the end of the regular season and think about the postseason. I believe that anyone out watching this game was shown that NHS will fight and that we deserve a top 10 ranking. I know it wasn't a win for us, but SPS had to fight for every inch on that field tonight. Thanks again MUnit for making the trip! brasilboy31

Just to clarify point # 6, and only because you used caps, the player did motion to the crowd twice to cheer after the hit. Easy to see from the stands, maybe not so easy with your back to the player while discussing the call with ref. Unfortunately behavior like this only diminishes the hard work of both teams on the field.

I was truly impressed with how both teams managed to turn a potential "Slop-fest" into a fairly well-played match and am amazed and thankful that no serious injuries were sustained by either squad.
SPS moved the ball extremely well considering the horrific conditions and stayed fairly well-organized. Although some real opportunities were foiled by their own attempts at "cute" ball handling inside the 18 instead of pulling the trigger.
NHS played a very strong game although the lack of sure footing reduced the effectiveness of their usual physical style of play. NHS (particularly #17) had their share of opportunities and as brasilboy31 himself mentioned the SPS GK Colin Hanley made a number of exceptional point-blank saves and a flurry of stops in the last few minutes that would preserved the Wolves' lead. That being said, NHS GK Larry Newby also made multiple amazing stops to keep the Panthers in the hunt until the final whistle.
Agree with M Unit and brasilboy31 the officiating deteriorated early and rapidly. It was as messy as the pitch and nearly as dangerous......
BTW...... loved the low, driven corner kick strategy used by NHS. Really effective on the narrow pitch and resulted in their first goal.
All in all one of the best LA high school matches I've seen this year and one that both teams should take pride in.
brasilboy31 - GREAT effort last night and even better post above. You represent yourself and your team well. Coach Laz and the Panthers are lucky to have you leading on the field. Your parents have done a great job and should be proud!!

Just something for everyone to think about: The Referee can call as many fouls and dish out as many cards as he likes but that doesn't mean anybody is going to stop playing dangerously. Yes, #18 SHOULD have been given a RED CARD. The ref did make the wrong decision there but have you honestly ever watched a sporting event where a ref makes the perfect call every time? I'll answer that for you: NO. The kids on Northshore's team simply play dangerously. Almost every time they were beaten on the dribble by an sps player, they would slide tackle (WITH STUDS UP). I'm glad i got out of that game with both my ankles intact (barely). #17 was and maybe 1 or 2 others were the only players that acted like they knew what sport they were playing (which WASN"T KICKBOXING). Northshore's team plays dangerously, that's not the ref's fault.
