It's worth pointing out that a lot of former pros did not come from ncaa d1 programs.
Like a lot of student athletes, many chose to go play for programs that gave them the best options..financially, academically, etc.
A lot of current d1 soccer programs were d2 programs 8, 10 and 20 years ago. Also the top naia programs were and still are as good as or even better than most d1 programs.
While the rules have changed somewhat, a lot of naia players are older, former professionals and semiprofessional players.
Lindsey-Wilson, Auburn-Montgomery, Mobile, William Carey, Azusa Pacific, Rio Grande, Hastings, William Carey and Belhaven are all perennial NAIA powerhouses. And all have put numerous players in the professional ranks over the years.
Quite a few non d1 players have been drafted into MLS in the 3rd and 4th rounds. And the likely reason they weren't drafted higher was probably due to lack of visibility.
USLPro and NASL also have plenty of former nonD1 players on their rosters.

The fact that Shane Jeanfreau (De La Salle 1990) is not mentioned on any of these "best" players list is a bit of a joke. . Anyone who has played with or against Shane knows how good he was. He played on the infamous 1990 Baton Rouge Jags team that reached the National Final and was arguably the best player on the field (yes, Jason Kreis included). It seems as though these list of names on this thread are all 2000 and later. Anyone who reads this thread and is remotely familiar with Shane will find it hard to disagree. Put him on the list!

again, if there is a list and jason kreis (mandeville) is not #1 then you do not know enough to make a legitimate list. 14 caps, 108 MLS goals, '99 MLS MVP. kreis is the best soccer player to have played louisiana high school soccer by far. I'll say he's the best that we know of. We know nothing about the players in the 60's, 70's, and most of the 80's. Also, Kreis was a great player but wasn't a top prospect. He was someone who was given the right opportunity and basically stole the show. His work ethic was, and apparently still it, definitely above and beyond most. Imagine if some of those kids at LSU would have taken their soccer careers a little more seriously.

To leave Jason Kreis out of this list would be an oversight on the border of dementia, Kreis was still a child and would play with men. He played in the Louisiana men select team at tender age of 15 , I played alongside him and he was beyond his years a Diamond in the rough. Then we have Portillo, His Father was a Special player I dare say even better than son, but in that Era Hispanics weren't given a fair share for whatever reason, Today soccer players have more opportunities to grow ,more support . I keep in touch with High School Soccer from watching family members or sons of past teammates and I can honestly tell you that best ever would have to be one Norman Serrano a consummate team player most of the Old Coaches in the Metro Area would agree with me in a heart beat! Oh yes that Baton Rouge team the 1990 Jaguars without a doubt great team! I'm biased I'd rank them second only to Motagua of New Orleans.

For people 30 years or older like me, Jason Kreis and Josh Henderson were the best 2 I've ever seen in this state.

We've had some very special players the past few years, but he is the standard they all try to reach. If he'd played here all 4 years I'm sure he'd have several school and state records.

Great thread. Love the history and the inspiration for current players. Good stuff!
More Louisiana kids can and should pursue the game beyond HS. Previous posts clearly make that case.

So in summary, since 1990 about 4 Louisiana players have played MLS or the equivalent, 0 National Team, 1 maybe in Columbia, and 0 in Europe.

Probably could add Justin Portillo and Anthony Peters to this list.

Too many Louisiana players don't look for opportunities beyond the levee after high school. Nobody plays the game because it's easy. Too many great HS players hang it up after HS. You don't need to go pro or national team to have a successful career in the game beyond high school. I'll say it again, great thread.

How awesome would it be to have some of these greats continue on as referees?

Hopefully more of these kids look to the Gulf Coast Premier League as a chance to see what the level beyond high school looks like. Plenty of current high school players are benefiting from playing a season in the GCPL. Edit: yes I’m plugging the GCPL. Get your kids out to watch, and if they’re good enough, get them involved. Great atmosphere for any kids heading off to college or returning.

Well I have a funny story. I’m Gallstar because I was on the 1993 first team Georgia State Allstar Team. While coaching a camp I’m tooting my own horn about scoring 31 goals as a senior to Rick Garey (Jason and Melissa Garey’s dad). He never says a word about my 31 goals just a smile and I’m puzzled. So the next day at camp I tell him about being all-district 25 NAIA D-1 at Lagrange college. He merely smiles and not a word. So I’m talking to another coach at the camp and ask about Rick’s kids. His response: Well Jason he holds the single season goal record with 71 goals and went on to win the Herman Award for the best college player in the country. Drafted #1 by the Columbus crew but blew out his hip. His daughter was the Female version for Texas AM. I understood why he wasn’t that impressed.

as most people have stated they dont know about LA high school soccer dating that far back.id be interested to see if someone can make a thread about maybe an all time best team dating back to maybe the last 5 years. That would be a fun thread that I think more people could contribute too. very cool seeing names of people considered to be all time greats in the state of LA though.

Who’s the fella from St Louis who was capped by the Rep of Ireland national team? Edit: Joe Lapira, remembered his name. That’s one who made the national team. I’m willing to bet there are other Central/South American kids who went on to have high level playing careers

I am assuming they are the only two to win the award from Louisiana.. Here could be a deep in depth search- how many players from Louisiana went to play at the next level and win their respective championship with their club?

Jason Garey (St. Amant) will be inducted into the LHSAA hall of fame this year. Pretty cool honor.
