A History of Soccer in Louisiana: 1858-2013
More than 150 years ago, before baseball, football, or basketball were known in Louisiana, before most of the world knew what soccer was, residents of the Irish Channel of New Orleans play one of the first organized games of soccer not just in Louisiana, not just in America, but in the world. The game causes quite the stir: all players are summarily arrested for disturbing the peace. Soccer stays confined to the streets of New Orleans until the 1890s when elite local amateur athletic clubs try out the game. The game's a hit. Out of those athletic clubs the first professional soccer league in Louisiana is born in 1907. The league has some of the finest quality soccer in the world. By the end of its first season, several players go abroad to play in the Scottish and English Premier Leagues, the top two leagues in the world at the time.
European expats and a steady stream of Central American immigrants keep the game alive in Baton Rouge and New Orleans from the 1920s until today. Through their efforts, playground soccer becomes popular, which gives way to high school and college soccer throughout the state, both of which help bring professional soccer back to Louisiana.
For the first time ever, Louisiana's lengthy and surprising soccer history is detailed in a narrative that brings together local, national and international history. Learn about the development of the game in the state, as well as some of the social and cultural obstacles that the sport still faces. Issues like Title IX, the move from public to private school soccer dominance, and the possibility of MLS are discussed. Don't be left in the dark as others learn about Louisiana's oldest team ball sport. Order A History of Soccer in Louisiana: 1858-2013 today.
