Is there a list of referee courses in Louisiana (or TX/AR)? I've never taken a course before, but I'm willing to travel from Shreveport for one, as I will most likely be coaching or out of town the two weekends that the course is offered here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys

Mandeville Soccer Club lists a referee course for January 10-12, 2014 on their website ( www.mscsoccer.org, then click on Referees tab)-- details to come, they say. The state referee site ( www.referee-la.com) is a good resource for requirements and upcoming courses -- although they don't list anything for the spring yet.

Does anybody know anything about refs being "certified", "approved" or "registered"? Does this apply only to the playoffs? Does this mean you have to get a higher grade on the LHSAA test to do playoff games? I have never heard of this before

High School certification is different than USSF (club) certification.
I'm not sure what stipulations LHSAA or associations have on playoff assignments.
Thanks to some actual soccer types on the HS Rules Committee, NFHS (high school) Rules are coming more in line with FIFA Laws of the Game. The HS Rules exam is...interesting. A third of the questions are submitted by the Rules Committee themselves, another third from school administrators, and another third from coaches. So some questions address practical situations, and others are concerned with how many manufacturers tags have logos on the nets or corner flags.
In another state, the minimum to pass was 75. The minimum to pass and work playoff assignments was 85. You had ten attempts at the exam. Once you scored 90, you could not retake the exam. This state was also discussing mandatory evaluations to select officials at the state semifinal and final rounds.
