When will the updated power rankings spreadsheet be published? I want to confirm the correct result versus Catholic PC. As racsoccer stated we play Christian Life tonight.

I just went thru my audits of the latest spreadsheet update. It has been corrected there & will be updated online once Squeak publishes at some point today.

Spreadsheet has been published with all games that were reported in before 8:30 this morning. Please check for errors and report them and any missing scores. Will try to have it published again late tonight or early tomorrow morning

I'm confused as to why lusher is ranked only 9th in Division III? I just recently got to see first hand how great they are and they should be ranked in the top five but the power rankings say otherwise...?
Btw i wanted to say congrats to andrew malinich on his 100 goals and 50 assists. Great job!

Btw i wanted to say congrats to andrew malinich on his 100 goals and 50 assists. Great job! The power rankings are a pretty imperfect system. They have a weak team in their district with only two total wins, yet they are required to play that team twice, and no matter how lopsided the game may be, they can only get 7 points in the PR system for the win. That will lower their average. Of course, most other top teams have some games against weak opponents, too, so it can kind of average out. I wasn't involved with developing the formula and don't know all the various things they may have considered, so I hate to criticize too much, but it does seem odd that in those Lusher vs. TJ games, TJ got more ranking points for losing than Lusher got for winning. I've been following Runnels, and they dropped down a few spots in the final week, despite the fact that they won their last two district games to secure second in district and had a draw against a pretty good Parkview team. But, because the teams they played didn't have a lot of wins, it dropped their average PR. Lusher is pretty well known by the coaches who vote, though, so they'll get their seeding bumped up higher than what the PR shows (at least for this year). Not so sure about Runnels, though.

Wow, we win out the last 6 matches, finish 2nd, and drop 7 spots falling 8 spots behind our 3rd place team who we shutout last week.

Wow, we win out the last 6 matches, finish 2nd, and drop 7 spots falling 8 spots behind our 3rd place team who we shutout last week. That's definitely possible (and can be disappointing). There are many variables that can affect who is where depending on your number (not your position) and the numbers of the teams close to you. It's why early in the season, they are and will be meaningless - the jumps are even more severe. Someone pointed out yesterday that Thomas Jefferson (district opponent) earned more points (twice) by losing to Lusher Charter than Lusher did for winning. And they were correct. I've joked that all of a sudden numbers nerds (and that's a poke at me - other names have been withheld to protect the innocent) just became a whole lot more valuable to the process...

Numbers nerds, unite. I just got e-mailed an offer for 10x what I'm getting now to help schedule a team next year. For you non-numbers nerds (10 x 0 is still 0)...

Is the Spreadsheet up to date? Looks like some teams like Airline should have got in.

Is the Spreadsheet up to date? Looks like some teams like Airline should have got in. It's up-to-date with everything we've received as of 11pm last night when Squeak last published. Note my comment on brackets thread that 9 of 32 teams reported something differently to LHSAA (by anywhere from 1-4 games) than what had been reported on LA Prep.

Error on our schedule. Airline beat haughton 3-2 in December, they did not lose 3-2. Thanks

Thanks Just checked the schedule page of the spreadsheet and this is what was posted for airline: 12/9/2014 Airline 3 Haughton 2 Haughton(host) Airline(winner) 2 1/23/2014 Airline 2 Haughton 1 Airline (host) Airline(winner) so it is correct in the spreadsheet.

Are the formulas used to calculate Power Ratings here on LaPrep the same that were approved by the LHSAA to be used next season?

Are the formulas used to calculate Power Ratings here on LaPrep the same that were approved by the LHSAA to be used next season? Essentially yes. There were 2 proposals (Power Ratings & Ties Allowed in District) that both passed. For this year, we did the calculations as if they would both pass. There's extended discussion throughout this thread & the Power Ratings Proposal thread if you want to dive into more details.

I think we can all now can see the weakness of the PR system, both in girls and boys. Just wait until you try to schedule games and the coaches are all looking at the PR and calculating what they gain or lose by playing you ... ala LHSAA boys basketball.
There is no mathmatical reason for pretending the PR does any better at ranking teams than ... say ... ranking them purely by won-lost record. No rational person would use this system to bet a sports game because the algorithems have no way of differentiating between playing Jesuit and playing Lutheran.
This year the coach seeding was pretty spot on ... compare what would have been in D-III if PRs had been used. Oh well, brave new world next year, adapt or die.

At least it would have still been Runnels vs Haynes whether going by coach seeding or PR, but the home team would have been different.
