Merry xmas LAprepers!! And yes, another one of loJic's crazy ideas that will go un-discussed and probably shrugged off as impossible to do because LA HS soccer is soooooo complicated to do any type of creative formatting and/or nobody cares that much. But due to my own personal boredom at work(don't tell my boss) and a recent comment I read from our good friend @hall97. I've scratched the surface on what a LA Champions League may look like. So sit back relax, or click here if you care not to go any further, and enjoy!
First off, the very first thing is to have the LHSAA allow such an event to happen. Primarily do the ruling that once a tournament has begun, no team participating in such tournament may play a contest outside of the tournament. Boomer, reference please!
So once we convince the LHSAA and the majority of teams who would qualify for this awesome tournament that this is the mecca of tournaments and it should exist. We then get into the nitty gritty of the logistics.
This tournament would be a year long process. Start it in early December and finish off right before playoffs. 24 teams, 8 groups. Toe-to-toe champions league style.
Qualifying: 24 teams qualify and it's simple if you ask me. All teams that were quarterfinalists from the previous year's playoffs qualify. If a team/s wishes to not participate then we choose the team/s that "finished" with the highest overall LHSAA power rating from regionals.
For example: Parkview had a great run last year and should again be a contender in DIII. But say they care not to play in a tournament with the likes of St. Paul's, Jesuit and Lafayette. We will then award the next team with the highest PR out of regionals. Which would be Alexandria. And the list goes on.
So a look at the teams that would be playing if it were to happen this year.
Seeding: Another simple solution. The top 8 seeds will be the champs, finalists and the two with the highest PR out of the Semi group. Which would look like this.
Jesuit, St. Louis, Episcopal BR, St. Paul's, Beau Chene, Newman, Lafayette, Brother Martin
Those would be your top seeds out of the 8 groups.
The next pot would be your remaining semifinalist along with the four qtrfinalists with the highest PR.
Ben Franklin, Vandebilt, Parkview, University, Airline, catholic BR, Acadiana, St. Thomas More
The final pot would be the remaining eight.
East Jefferson, Bolton, Teurlings, E.D. White, Catholic NI, Lusher, Northlake, Westminster
Groups: Just like the UEFA Champions League there will be restrictions on which teams face off. Having district opponents not fall in the same group would be in place. Also, due to travel, teams that are off the beaten path, Airline in this case, would only qualify to play in a bracket with the teams closest to them. So as a 2 seed, they would only be eligible to play in Lafayette, Beau Chene or St. Louis' group. And the same goes for placing the 3 seed in that group. The 3 seed with the closest location to Airline would be drawn into that group.
Random draws, with the restrictions in place this is how it could look like.
Each team plays each other twice. Top of the table advances to knockout stages. Teams are reseeded and played down to the finals and walah! A TRUE state champions emerges!
The knockout stages could have a home/away leg set up depending on if teams agree on playing a total of 9 games in a tournament.
You could also just due the top 12. Champs, finalists and semifinalists. This would only be 4 groups and probably a lot more grueling. Either way, in the land loJic this tournament lives on.
