I'd like to get some opinions from the moderators / coaches / others who are knowledgeable and skilled in the art...
What makes that Freshman player on your team worthy of being an "All-State" Freshman? What are the objective criteria by which you make a cogent argument to other voting coaches that your player is worthy of the honor? Does the player have to start? If not, how much playing time would the player have to play? I realize there are probably different criteria for a defender as opposed to a midfielder or forward, but generally what tangible criteria would you use to sell a player and conversely, what are you "buying into" as an opposing coach that is being asked to agree on a player who is not one of your own?

Wow...I didn't realize what a hard question this was! I guess I'll have to go to Tibet, climb a high mountain and find some Buddhist monk sitting cross-legged at the top; he'll say "So you want to know the meaning of life?" And I'll reply, "No, not really, just want to know what tangible qualities it takes to be an All-State Freshman in soccer".

just as a reply, and to say yes it is possible for a freshman to make the all-state team. last year Ben Franklin in Div II placed three freshman on the all-state team... one on the first team and two on the second team....not sure what the criteria was in selecting them....with that said those freshman were instrumental in helping Ben Franklin win the DII state title.....

One thing that I do know is that for all-freshman teams the coaches come up with a brief description of the player (which is not something they do for all-state). Presumably this is because other coaches are not as familiar with freshmen as they would be with older players. What influences the coaches? I couldn't say. I'm sure some look at playing time and stats, but should a great freshman who doesn't play much on a state championship team be left out in favor of someone who starts every game for a weaker team? I'd have to imagine that reputations from club soccer factor in, probably more than they do with all-state or all-district teams.
Also, keep in mind that if coaches don't nominate their players, they aren't going to get picked. I noticed one school that has a number of very good young players who were starters, yet those girls didn't end up on the all-freshman team. Whether that's because they didn't get nominated or because the voters didn't pick them, I don't know.

To make Kevin's point clearer. If the coach is lazy forget about it. He/she can also be a jerk, don't get your hopes up.

It comes down to having to be nominated- so the coach. Then most likely his explanation of why may have an effect.
However, if coaches who are voting are extremely familiar with other players from their area- you might not get a shot.
