Greetings,
We've settled in PA and my middle son (Josiah) has made the Varsity squad at a Division I public school (Cumberland Valley HS). He's been starting at left outside back. High school takes place in the fall so I thought I'd share a few observations/rules that I've encountered so far that are different.
1) All tied games go to overtime for up to 2 10-minute periods. A winner is determined with what is called a "sudden victory" goal. At the end of the 20 minutes, it will be considered a tie (shootouts do NOT take place in regular season).
2) Yellow card recipients must leave the game for a minimum of 5 minutes (not just to the next allowable substitution opportunity).
3) Referees are in black/white stripes (and dual system is used).
4) Offside is signaled by the official putting both hands on hips (a la American football).
5) The clock counts backward and the officials can stop it (like during the college game) for injuries, etc. The buzzer will sound at the end of the period (and if an announcer is present, they countdown the last 10 seconds).
I'm sure there will be more. I'm still trying to figure out conferences, divisions, playoffs, etc.
Paul

Paul,
Are you sure that's soccer they're playing? 5 minutes for a yellow? whew....I wouldn't be very popular with the refs in PA.

Paul, Are you sure that's soccer they're playing? 5 minutes for a yellow? whew....I wouldn't be very popular with the refs in PA. You would've enjoyed yesterday's game. Twice the ball was called out. No whistle. They just told the players it was out. Obviously play continued because you couldn't tell who said it was out. It was done once by each of them. The 2nd one pointed out he doesn't need to blow his whistle when pressed by the players. I didn't include that in the list because I don't think it's the way it is - just the way this particular crew saw it.

Laffy Mom .....I'm especially not popular with refs here, double especially in Lafayette.
Paul - that would make my head explode....good luck to you guys. Somehow two foreign exchange students landed at Lusher, one from Spain, one from Denmark. They both can play, it should be interesting....

Interesting thread on the differences. Like some of them
Play wide- check rules, believe only one of those foreign exchange will be allowed to play.

Very exciting news...not about your head exploding, but about the new students. Roar Lions! I will probably now think of you with every unusual call that occurs. Not that I didn't already.

Pompey -- Technically one is exchange, the other moved to town with parents. But never surprised by LHSAA....I'm sure there is some rule at LHSAA that technically prevents everyone from playing everything. We'll just tell them he moved to America because he was bullied at his former school and submit appeal...that seemed to work for a couple of people last year.

Only one foreign exchange student per sport... Paperwork required for each FES would reveal true status so I wouldn't attempt to "fool" the LHSAA. While the rule may seem crazy, as always, each rule is often a response to something that happened... I believe it was Vermillion catholic basketball that won a state title with like 6 foreign exchange students from Brazil and Argentina? It may have been another school, but that is the story about why the rule is in place. Usually, if you can get one really good foreign exchange student, you have done well! Most are average as American soccer players or even less. But occasionally, you can find that special one that somehow ended up as a FES. I think Neville had a really special one from Sweden a few years back. Good luck to y'all... I'm sure we will see you on Black Friday at your place!

Ugh....I see the board is in mid-season form already. There is only one FES student, the other one moved to town with parents.Pardon my casual use of the term. geez...and nobody said anything about trying to fool anyone I was making light of one of the most ridiculous appeals I've ever heard and weighing it against the fact that LHSAA would stop someone from playing a sport because they are visiting from another country because one time a bunch of years ago some team won a State Championship with "too many" non-Americans. I will go back into hibernation now...It was good to hear updates from you Paul. We miss you and hope the family is doing well. By the way Paul, who keeps time on the 5 minute Penalty Period for the yellow card offender to return to play? That rule is the second most ridiculous thing I have heard all day...

The penalty thing sounds like hockey. Do the announcers say they are on a power play?

We definitely miss the Lusher family. As Josiah got introduced to his new team, it was as a State Champion and we cherish that special run last year. I'm not sure who keeps time on penalties. Our home field has a full size clock & I think it's run by one of the coaches if no one is in the booth (although there usually is). At the rural school we just played, they had a portable clock on the side of the field. So I'm guessing it's up to the coaches, but we'll see if I can find more. They have had ball boys at every game so far. It feels like that may be a mandatory protocol, but it's still early in our learning curve. Stay tuned!

Here's another one. And I like this one.
6) Two Ball Runners (a/k/a Ballboys) are required to be provided by the home team (or start of game is delayed).
Last night I was able to be one at a friend's small school whose 2nd half was delayed by lightning. The first half ball runner must've gone home. It's a great place to see the game as long as you're not cheering for either team (need to be impartial).

Thanks for the info. It's always interesting to compare how things are done in different places. As for the specific differences: I think America is just getting used to draws in soccer so I kind of prefer they allow the game to end in a draw at the end of regulation. Although if they do overtime, I do like the golden gold concept. It seems like it is asking lot for the refs to monitor having yellow carded players sit out at least 5 minutes. Especially if there are only two of them. Sounds more like an indoor small sided game concept. I'm kind of neutral on the clock running backwards and the refs being able to stop it. I don't have a problem with it but it is another deviation from the normal game. Ballboys - It's ashamed this has to be a rule but there were a couple of places we travelled to last year as visitors where the home team didn't have them. Luckily we had a lot of younger brothers and were able to provide them. Regarding the only one exchange student- that must be the Mike Ditka and Will Ferrell rule

Luckily we had a lot of younger brothers and were able to provide them. Regarding the only one exchange student- that must be the Mike Ditka and Will Ferrell rule Let me go one step further. NFHS (High School) Rules stipulate that if a stadium clock is present, that it shall be the official time. HS does count backwards from 40 to 0. The referee can start or stop this time with a signal and he may also add time as appropriate at the next stoppage. When the clock hits 00:00, we are done. There is no concept of additional time. For as much of a FIFA purist as I am, I find it a lot easier to manage time in a HS game. There is no question about when time is up...the clock is official and this leads to zero arguments about how much time should be added (or robbed of, if a team is trailing). Ball boys are also required per NFHS Rules, it isn't just a PIAA thing. I'm glad to see PIAA got away from a three whistle system...now THAT would make people cringe in these parts. And I completely detest the football/basketball referee shirts.

At our school I think they stop the clock at 2 min mark so they can add time.
