www.nola.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/09/mercedes-benz_superdome_could.html#incart_riverMercedes-Benz Superdome and SMG officials are awaiting word on if New Orleans will be part of the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer series next summer. Superdome general manager Alan Freeman said during Wednesday's LSED meeting he expects to know by November if the Crescent City will host one of the early round international soccer series games next July. SMG, which manages the Superdome, put in the bid this summer after being asked to bid by the organization. "We are cautiously optimistic," Freeman said. "This is a pretty substantial event." SMG has agreed to put up the $200,000 it would cost to put natural grass in the Superdome temporarily for the event. The Superdome has also agreed to cover some other marketing promotional costs in additional to some other miscellaneous concessions, as well.

Dress rehearsal for 2018 World Cup qualifier?
"To me this is really crucial that we put on a really good show," Bruno said during Wednesday's meeting. "In 2018 we didn't get the Super Bowl so we want to replace that with a major event and that so happens to be a World Cup year and they have all of those pre-games.

Let's hope we get it. This is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Louisiana soccer fans. I will be more than willing to make multiple drives to and from Baton Rouge and to shell out hundreds of dollars to get tickets to multiple matches.
Travelling four-and-a-half hours to Houston to see one match can't beat driving one hour to see several matches.
We need to really come out in big numbers if we ever want this opportunity again. Beyond hosting potential USA friendlies and other matches in the future, I'm sure MLS will also look at the attendance and determine if an MLS franchise in New Orleans could ever be sustained.
New Orleans won't be one of the 24 MLS franchises by 2020, but a good showing here could possibly get us consideration for the next time MLS expands.

If we can land a game featuring Honduras or the US, I believe it'll be a success. I'll probably end up going no matter what teams end up playing here, but I don't know of many people who are saying the same thing.

The USSF considers Louisiana and the deep south to be wastelands for soccer. They are extremely biased and prejudiced against Louisiana.
