Thank you to everyone that participated in or attended the 2014 Louisiana Showcase of Soccer. I greatly appreciate everyone's understanding and patience while we dealt with the weather and were forced to change the schedule. We were able to complete 60 competitive games in 9 hours for a great an incredible day of soccer. Lastly, thank you to the officials and to the St. Louis Catholic soccer parents for all their hard work to make the tournament a success.
Thanks,
Jason Oertling St. Louis Catholic Soccer

Great job again with the tournament, Jason. Having that many games to oversee in one day is brutal, but you and your crew did an excellent job.

Jason, You and your staff did another outstanding job hosting the Showcase. You certainly could not control the weather but did a great job of communicating with the coaches so that we could let our teams and parents make adjustments. I am praying for good weather at the Holiday Cup and hope I can return the favor of hosting a good tournament so that you can enjoy coaching and watching your teams play.
This was our first time playing with the "big boys" in the Orange Group. Once the schedule came out I knew that we would have to make significant changes to our formation, tactics and game plan. We have at most 12 players that can play at a very high level at this time and are trying to develop at least 3 or more that can help us this year. Reminds me of the Tara team about 7 years ago. Thank God it rained out on Friday........I'm not sure how we would have lasted playing Beau Chene, Acadiana and Northlake plus Kelly, TX. We were able to play two pretty tough games vs Acadiana and Northlake then like "Warrior 16" (18 year old Michael Stein said) we were like Zombies. And needed everyone on the bus to finish the last game.
Our planning started Friday when I decided we would hit the road as scheduled even with no games on Friday night. Mid terms had just finished and I know what Seniors have on their minds with a Friday night off after Mid Terms. Since we had already raised the funds for our charter bus, rooms and meals I told the team we were hitting the road as scheduled. This way I could control their meals, rest, bed checks (kids fear Coach Estuardo- The Defensive Dictator and his flash light), wake up, breakfast, etc. That was our first smart decision.
When the revised schedule posted I saw that we had Acadiana first, then Northlake and Kelly, Tx last. This was as good a schedule as we could have for the depth of the team we have. We had already seen Acadiana's results and I made the comment that they were like "Denham Springs on steroids". They had dangerous weapons and speed all over the field and were putting up multiple goals on really good teams. One of our Senior Center mids was out with the flu and we weren't sure if he would even be able to make the trip on Saturday. We decided to scrap our 4-4-2 (diamond formation) in the back and go with a 4-2-3-1. We knew that we would only have a handful of chances. But the boys knew as long as the score was "0" and we were patient that we could manufacture a goal from a corner kick, direct kick, etc. Little did I know that chance would come in the 3rd minute when a ball that was crossed in was tapped in for an apparent goal (but was called off sides as one of our players tapped it in to push it in as it slowed down in the mud on the line). Our defense played outstanding (Seniors Alexa Silva, Joel DeRobertis and Jake Buss and Sophmores Cameron White and Ethan Loewe had great games). Our Goal Keeper, Andrew Fulton, stepped up big time and had the best tournament of his career. He made some huge stops and great decisons- and to think he never played keeper until 11th grade (no club, no rec). I won't say more about the rest of the formation because this is one that we may use again. Looking at Acadiana's results I certainly had to respect their squad, but certainly did not fear what we were getting into. The boys had a game plan and knew we would be defending half the field and only counter attack when we had possession. I'm proud of how hard they battled and executed the game plan.
I had actually used this formation a couple times in club season this past Fall and last Spring. I can recall a game where one of the Mandeville teams beat us 8-0 in a tournament. Then 10 days later switch from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 and we won 1-0. Would Acadiana beat us 7 out of 10 times. Probably, but on Saturday we played them to a 0-0 tie and nearly pulled out the win. We controlled all of the factors that we could then the boys played their hearts out.
Vs Northlake we started with the same formation and when they scored we switched one of the defensive mids to the midfield and pushed Mitchell Williams to forward- he scored the equalizer 3 minutes later. Northlake is also loaded with speed, talent and very dangerous players. Once again our defense stood strong. The 1-1 tie was well earned against a very tough opponent. We were pushed hard by two very good teams and no doubt improved our game a notch or two. One that we would not have been able to do without playing in tournaments.
We knew that our game vs Kelly. TX would not count in the power rankings and that our tank was empty. We did try to win it but we were spent. We played everybody who was on the bus and rightly so.
For those of you all who like to hear about the nuts and bolts of soccer..............this is how we tick. We must continue to improve every week. Not much rest as we will face St. Amant tonight at "The Pit" where every throw-in is more dangerous than a corner kick.

St. Michael 0 Acadiana 0 Shots on goal: Acadiana 16 St. Michael 0 St. Michael keeper single handedly secured the tie for his team. Possession 90/10 Acadiana- fields are soft but holding up decently. Shocked... dssoccer - Arguments about stats aside...regarding the outcome: You know the st mike's team pretty well - consider what happens if they dropped one particular attacker into midfield. Results are a more composed, disciplined midfield with limits on attacking opportunities. All it takes is one chance to get converted...which almost happened.

My shock is that #18, 3, 24(?i think - strong short kid - striker), and 10 didn't crack the defense. Those four can be a handful.

Not sure about #3 (was he playing on the left? that wing was fast!), but absolutely get your thoughts on the other three players. I feel like I'm not venturing too far to say that you know they all play on the same club team along with the aforementioned St.Mike's player as well as two of your guys. The Rams have a potent team, but on that particular day, couldn't seem to crack the code. Got a bit chippy toward the end, but I saw the club players from both sides posing together for a pic afterwards. I wish we would that more often during the high school season.
