In our area we have a scheduling situation for district games whereby schools must schedule district soccer and basketball games on the same night, but at opposite schools. For example, Fontainebleau and Slidell are scheduled to play each other tonight -- soccer at Slidell, basketball at Fontainebleau. As I understand it, this is mandated by the principals to help with staffing support at the events. Is this a common practice across the state?
To me, this hurts attendance for both sports as students, parents, and fans must choose one or the other. And with basketball being indoors in January, you can guess who usually wins out. Soccer players cannot go to some of the bigger basketball games and vice versa. And the parents who have a child in each sport are really out of luck.
This especially became an issue this year when our district (6-I, an eight-team district) went to playing each district opponent once in soccer as opposed to playing twice home and away. Because of this scheduling rule some teams have a majority of district matches at home while others play many more on the road. (Fontainebleau has 2 district games at home and 5 on the road this season, while Mandeville has 5 at home and 2 on the road.) Hopefully this is just a one-year issue, but it's still bizarre.
As I understand it baseball and softball are not subject to the same scheduling requirement -- they can schedule any time they want without full consideration of the other sport.
Do other areas have this same issue? Just curious . . .

Seems bizarre. And what about kids who want to play both sports--I know it's rare, but it happens, even at big schools with good teams.
It baffles me that they would allow such a lopsided number of home and away games.

I heard one of the coaches complained to the chairperson of the district about the distribution of home vs. away games and was basically told "tough darts, too bad". I don't know how many home games the district chairperson's team ended up with . . .

In this district, your district schedule next year will make up for the lack of home games this year. At Northshore, this year we have 5 at home and two away. Next year we will have 2 at home and five away. Order that we play opponents will stay the same.

Thanks, Coach -- but isn't that dependent on what the new districts look like as this is a redistricting year? If the split into four divisions occurs there may be some shakeup in the district membership.

This year, when we decided to play only one round, the second round schedule was the one used. If I'm not mistaken, our playing order has changed every two years. As well as home/away. Over a two year cycle, we will all have the same number of home matches.

Still not crazy about the soccer/basketball issue -- we have one dad this year that has two daughters playing basketball and a son playing soccer. All are seniors, so he has to choose which one(s) to watch each night they play.
