As the District 1 race finished this evening, I couldn't help but notice the unusual parity between 5 of the 7 teams in the district
Even though Captain Shreve survived unbeaten in district play (second year in a row) they tied matches against Caddo Magnet and Byrd (winning the other contest with each team)
Magnet suffered an early season loss to Parkway and won by the same score in the rematch 2-1
Byrd split their series with Airline
Airline took both games against Parkway yet Parkway scores more goals in their two games versus Shreve than any other district team (6) and more each game (3) than the total goals scored on Shreve by either Airline (0) Byrd (2) or Magnet (2)
As of the 1/28 Power Rating District 1 had 4 teams north of 32. Assuming Shreve gets its game played in the morning with Evangel, Shreve will get its 15th game and a seed somewhere between 8 and 12 and if remaining non district game results fall as expected Shreve's PR should climb into the high 13's maybe even low 14's. Airline's loss to Magnet tonight will make for a nervous finish for them. Byrd can really help themselves with a win versus 17 win Ruston.
In the PR era there hasn't been a need to beat the drum for Shreve this year but as the year draws nearer to a close I think it is remarkable what Coach Slack and the core returning players have managed to accomplish given:
....Last years Quarterfinalist 18 man varsity roster LOST 11 players on the squad to graduation
...another key reserve (who would have been a starter this season) transferred back to a school in S LA
...a preseason projected starter (Sophomore) went down with a knee injury right after practice started this fall..he got his first minutes this week V. Parkway and should be available for playoffs but fitness and touch will certainly be diminished
....our 16 man varsity roster (recently bolstered with some late JV additions) is currently starting 2 freshmen ( one of which Will Adcock who mans an outside back position is certainly deserving of all freshman honors) and 2 sophomores which might be commonplace in D3 but in D1 not so much
..our starting goalie is a sophomore, the backup is a 6'3" freshman man-child
my first year as a parent with a player on this squad (6 years ago), the team had 17 club player on its 18 man varsity roster and made the semi's (the previous year they had made it to and lost in the finals)
Shreve has learned to incorporate some good athletes along with its limited full time club players to create a squad that can be dangerous but not necessarily playing the beautiful possession game that was its hallmark not to many years ago.
