Help out a new soccer brother! On a throw-in, why would/does the player throwing the ball in intentionally hit the opposing player with the ball? I'm not referring to a player guarding another player but the player who "contests" the throw-in by standing 3 yards in front of said thrower. I saw this done twice this year and am curious as to the strategy, if any.

The minimum required distance is 2 yards. But it sends a message - get out of my face. As long as the throw is with proportionate force, and not a shot at the head, I don't have an issue here.

Possible he could not find anyone "open" and wanted to shake things up by deflecting it off the defender and back out of bounds and get another quick throw in while people were moving around.

However, the defensive player may not in any way interfere with the thrower, and this includes distractions such as waving hands, yelling, etc. Frankly, standing within 3 yards is somewhat questionable in my eyes, unless it is a quick throw... even though the rules allow as close as 2 yards.
I've seen instances where a defensive player is deliberately interferring with the throw, jumping up and down, etc., and the thrower hits her... inadvertent or on purpose is hard to tell. Why not just stay away from the thrower?
This same applies to free kicks.. so many teams think they have a right to contest the taking of the freebie unless the CR cautions them. If fact, interferring with the right to continue play is a caution in itself.

My son did this a few years back. tight game that was getting close to O T when a kid tried to slow down the throw by standing in front of him. when he turned his back once the defense was set my son bounced it off his rear end, stepped on the field and sent a bullet down the line for a quick counter. every one in the stands thought it was funny as hell.

Thanks folks! Sounds like its one way to say "Back that thang up". I'm fine with it also as long as the throw is toward the feet. I witnessed one of these that hit the defender in the bread basket and thought to myself, "I don't much about soccer but what the heck was that?". I have listened to soccer enthusiasts at these games complain about aggressive play and that "real" soccer is a gentlemen's/finesse sport. I admit that I enjoy a good physical match up but the bread basket throw, if for no strategic purpose, demonstrated a lack of class. IMO

I wouldn't want to do what the player in the blue jersey did:

This was in club where I played keeper for a half and center-mid for half. The reason the center-mid was throwing the ball in is because our backs were having a difficult enough time defending this team. Also, I have witnessed a keeper attempt a throw-in. In the SPS v. NLC game. The ball went out inches before the end line and the SPS goalkeeper ran over and almost threw the ball in! His right-back ran over to stop him. lol

Actually, the person standing within 2 yards of the thrower gets the yellow card. Happened in our Semifinal game 2 years ago as all game a kid would jump up at our deep thrower and eventually he got hit hard and he got the card.

I threw it off his back and played the ball. I guess the red thought I did it with bad intentions.
