The Mandeville Soccer Club U17 Lakers Elite boys got off to a good start today with a 3-0 win over Murrieta Surf B97 White from Southern California. Jake Lewis (Northlake Christian) got the scoring started in the first half with a free kick from just outside the box, and the Lakers carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. Two second-half goals by Nick Isolani (St. Paul's) finished the scoring -- one on a penalty kick and another off a corner.
Weather was 82 degrees and breezy, with relative humidity of 25 percent at 11:00am kickoff time.
The Lakers play again at 5:00pm Pacific time today against International SC St. Tomas from Nevada.

The MSC U17 Lakers Elite advanced to 2-0-0 in the Players College Showcase in Las Vegas this afternoon with a 3-2 win over International SC St. Tomas from Nevada. The Lakers went down 0-1 late in the first half, but immediately answered with a goal by Gabe Frosch (Mandeville HS) to go into halftime tied 1-1.
The Lakers almost went ahead early in the second half on a great cross by Chase Rushing (Jesuit) and a beautiful header by Blake Dalferes (Pope John Paul), but a great save by the International SC keeper kept the game level. Shortly thereafter the Lakers took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Avery Ferrara (Archbishop Hannan) from a feed by Austin Groeneveld (St. Paul's). Later in the half the Lakers had another chance, but a header by Keegan Stanworth (Lakeshore HS) just skimmed the crossbar. Blake Dalferes scored with a little over 5 minutes to go to put the Lakers up 3-1. International scored on nearly the last play of the game to make the score closer, but the game ended 3-2 Lakers.
The Lakers lead their group with 6 points through 2 games. They will play Three Rivers Soccer Club from Washington state tomorrow morning at 8:00am Las Vegas time. A win or a tie will give the Lakers the bracket championship. EDIT: this is a change from earlier, as the score of a game was apparently entered incorrectly.

The MSC U17 Lakers Elite won their bracket in the MGM Group at the Players College with a 1-1 tie against Three Rivers SC from Pasco, WA this morning. An early goal by Austin Groeneveld (St. Paul's) off a feed from Blake Dalferes (Pope John Paul) gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead, but Three Rivers evened the shore late in the half. There was lots of back-and-forth action in the second half, but neither team could score. Three Rivers applied lots of late pressure since they had to win to advance, but the Lakers stood tall to gain the tie they needed.
Our team commentator who is at the game said it was non-stop action and beautiful soccer throughout the game, and that Three Rivers was the best team they had played thus far in the tournament.
Weather was 62 degrees at 8:00am Las Vegas time, with a crisp 34 percent humidity. Sounds delightful.
The Lakers, who are 2-0-1 in the tournament, will play in the MGM Group semifinals tonight at 6:30pm against either Santa Monica (CA) United or Hawaii Rush.

Well, the Lakers ran into a buzzsaw tonight and dropped a 4-0 decision to Santa Monica United of Southern California in the MGM Group semifinals. Santa Monica was just a better team.
Santa Monica will play for the group championship tomorrow afternoon, while the Lakers are finished for the tournament.
Still a great tournament for the Lakers as they went 2-1-1 and won their group in their first ever visit to the Las Vegas Showcase. Good showing for Louisiana. Safe travels home.
