So as a HS coach I can not coach a rec team of 7th graders? if this is for 7-12 grade how do the club coaches that also coach at private schools get around this? It seems like this would really hurt all involved if it was enforced. The rule I posted is referring to a HS coach training players for their HS team. The independent team rule is different. You can coach up to 6 players from your school on an independent team. The way I understand it is if you coach at a school that has 7-12 graders at the same school with the same principal the 6 person rule would apply to your rec team. If the middle school is completely separate from the HS you coach at, you are ok. I would ask the LhSAA in this one... Is your middle school team in a school only league? If so, I would think it isn't a true independent team and is really a junior high team like a Jv team, etc... You are obviously getting these kids anyway if they are already there so there isn't an undue influence issue which is the whole basis for the independent team rule player maximum. And still... Undue influence is probably the most abused rule in the Lhsaa but also the hardest to prove. The main thing is this... If the kid doesn't live in your natural zone and another team could have him as eligible in year one beside your team, then don't coach that kid in 8th grade. Also, don't coach a u14 team that is majority kids going to your school cause if onky one kid not in your zone transfers to your school or a feeder school to,be eligible at your school, they will be ruled ineligible as a freshman if caught. I could have turned in many situations of this in past few years but didn't. Cause I don't think this is a Good rule. This isn't a true recruiting. I had to give up my whole club coaching that I created in St Landry parish cause my son and all the boys I had coached since basically U9 or or earlier were going to 8th grade and few could come to my school (using minority to majority) or Opelousas high or even Oc or Westminster if they choose and most were coming to BC already and locking in our zone for years.. Also, had a younger team we were developing... All of the dedicated main players transferred to CSC or Dynamo and are all on comp 1 teams. But sad I had to give up my sons team and break it up as we were very close to breaking into Comp 1 last year as we finished in a 3 way tie in preliminaries for our group and had we not subbed and gave up a meaningless goal in agame we were losing at the final whistle, we win the 3 way tie and move on. We need more help,in St Landry Parish developing these kids at rec ages and then onto academy like teams at u9 or u10 and then competitive teams cause we have tons of talent here when we develop, them. We also, have many great untapped areas that are starting city rec leagues like in Opelousas. Back to the original point... But the limits of coaching them as a High school coach have gotten so ridiculous that I can't be the head guy to spear this and coach some kids cause of worrying that I'm unduly influencing kids! It's crazy! I love the High school game better as a coach and a fan... But for my kids development and future, of course I know club and competitive is where it happens. This was my first year in 12 years I had t coached competitive soccer and last 9 with high school. Was burned out and that break rejuvenated me for high school. Legendary Teurlings coach Lance Peltier told me this a couple years ago (about the nice break of no Leger coaching club with high school) when he finally stopped coaching club and he was so right... But I do miss it badly. But the time to devote to my work and family and just me and my kids is nOw better and have time to recharge batteries. Going to do some new things this summer we have never done and hope, they work out even better than past summers. The new D2 seems like it's going to be a fun division for many teams and will be very interesting I feel. Good luck and sorry for the rant.... But I just don't agree with the undue influence nor the club coaching rule but we can't do anything about it. Especially the coaching 8th graders is a tad bit ridiculous for everyone.

Influence occurs much earlier than that. I remember hearing from several coaches that any girl that plays soccer on our end of town should go to X school as young as u11. We dod not let this influence us as I was not picking a high school based on soccer but I'm sure others have.
The same thing happens with a few other schools as well and not all are private.
