Whats everybodys take on the idea of a school charging its athletes a fee to participate in a sport? We arent talking about equipment fees, we are talking about a fee that is charged just to play.
Along with that, what would be considered an acceptable dollar amount? Again, not for equipment, uniforms or anything else, just a fee to play.
Thoughts?

Is the fee to offset referee costs, team expenses, bus, lights, meals for away trips?

I've seen $100-200 as a sport fee. Varies by sport - guessing it's related to costs. It was new to me when we came to LA. I speculated it as a post-Katrina way to recover (but that may be totally off base).

We are charged $100 per sport to play for high school. It is $50 in middle school. I have a friend that paid $350 at public school.

Ray. We did it the first couple years Along with tons of fundraisers and poboy sales. Finally after starting Copa ACADIANA, we slowly started dropping things. Fees went away in year 3 and most of the fundraisers have now gone except the program and sponsorship ads and maybe a raffle still exists. But tournament carries us for the year now. I see no problem with the registration fee. Our girls charge it and also, made the girls buy their uniforms.
now, we only charge them things they buy... Like warm ups (they can wear to school as a jacket and also it is theirs to do as they want. Some freshmen classes are lucky and don't need a new one, but usually Nike changes styles every 3-4 years. That is most expensive thing we charge them and it's $125. We also, charge for game socks... If they take care of them then they don't need to buy them every year... But most do. $10 a pair and 3 colors for varsity and 2 for Jv. We also charge them $40 for their pair of pregame dry fit shirts instead of pregame pennies, they wear the different color shirts for drills. They also use in Summer league. So they onky pay for things they buy for themselves. We also charge $30 a kid for hotel costs each overnight trip (usually 3 a year) but we pay for all meals and travel and snacks and stuff. So even with all the Copa revenue, we still charge for things... It's just things they get to keep.

We don't pay for uniforms. Everything is on loan for the season. I would actually love to buy socks.
Our school hasn't done any tournaments in the past. I think largely because the team has been coed. Not sure if that will change now that we will have separate teams. I think the money goes mostly towards uniforms. They pretty much buy one new kit or warmups every year.

What do you mean by a fee? Are you talking about a fee that is charged by the school and goes directly to the school and is not used by the sport?
Like others, my son's school does not provide any funds for soccer (or any other sport). Everything is raised by each sport. For soccer, it is done through fundraising and a set fee charged to each player. The school provides a coach (one of the football coaches) and the facility.

We don't do any other fundraisers. I'm sure our school supports all the sports to some aspect. The boys coach is a full time employee. The girl's coach is not. I have no idea what the financial arrangements are. We just normally have to work concessions for one home game and pay admission to the games.

I think it just depends on the situation. Every program is different.
At St. Michael, our boys pay for their warm-up shirts, game shorts, and socks. It really helps that BRSC is also sponsored by Adidas and happens to have a red and black color scheme, so our kids that play club can often use the same socks and shorts during the high school season that they do during the club season, provided they take care of them. Adidas changes styles every few years. Some kids like more than one pair of socks and we use red, white, and black. I would say it never costs them more than $100 a year, unless they have to order new ones.
In return, we provide the game jerseys, as well as all other equipment they would need. Generally we can pay for all travel, meal, and referee expenses with the profits we make from the Holiday Cup
