While I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this, I would appreciate the experienced refs on this board giving an opinion.
Team A crosses ball across Team B’s goal. Ball is too high for Team A’s player. Team A’s player jumps up with two hands and attempted to hit/throw/direct the ball into the goal.
Other than the obvious call of handling, should this be a booking offense?

From Law 12 (Fouls and Misconduct) of the 2017-2018 IFAB (International Football Association Board) Laws of the Game:
There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player:
* handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal (whether or not the attempt is successful) or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal (NOTE: This is the seventh item in the list of circumstances where the player should be given a YC.)
NFHS rules are different in some areas, and I have no idea if this is one. (I never refereed high school.)

Sounds like a caution to me

Thank you both for the feedback. The referee decision in this particular case was to award Team B a free kick. No caution given (which would have been this player’s second).

By attempting are you saying he was not successful in making contact with his hand or arm? Or are you saying he was successful in making contact with hand or arm but was not able to divert it into the goal. How you answer tells me how to answer.

Ball actually hit the post after handling.

Definitely this is a cautionable offense, he attempted to score a goal using his hands.
