well, having come from the St Paul tourney today, I heard some interesting comments from fans...so much that I thought I would start a thread...in no certain order, with my normally sarcastic coments in parenthesis:
1.. Come on ref! (come on? why, are we going somewhere? am I late? i'm so confused)
2. Call it both ways ref! (well, i would call it both ways, but only 1 team is fouling, so they are getting the calls...when the other team starts committing fouls, i'll call some aginst tehm as well)
3. he wasn't offside...offside is when the ball is kicked, not when he receives it (really? wow, when did they change that?)
4. how about you call something for us for a change (see #2 above)
5. you're missing a great game ref (i know, but I was assigned to this one)
6. handball, handball, handball (not even worth pointing out that there is no foul called handball)
7. he's playing on the ground (really, as opposed to levitating like all the other players? do you mean he is playing in a dangerous manner?)

1: "but he got the ball" - yes, but going through the other guy's knee, with, granted, only 6 of your cleats, to get there is slightly against the Spirit of the Game.
2: "he wasn't the last man, it can't be a red card" - see #1 above.
3: "you yelled play on, you can't bring it back now" - unfortunately, the player's leg has since fallen off, only being partially severed in #1 above
4: "you can't book him for his first foul of the game" - see #1 above

One more to add:
1: I could ref better than you . . . (then add any number of reasons why they don't ref!)

I've found it a source of amusement that, especially during HS matches because of the stadium setting, there is always once voice that stands out from the crowd throughout the match.
If you listen carefully to this one voice that over-rides all others, you realize that the owner has no concept of the game.

Heard this one tonight.....
"Hey ref, you can't end time until the defense gains possession and clears it at least 20 yards upfield. That's the way it is in college, it should be like that in HS too. If the offense has the ball within 20 yards of the goal the ref just keeps adding time like in college"

umm, they don't do this in college. there is no added time in college, the official timekeeper stops the clock on subs, cautions or send offs, PKs, and injuries. Otherwise, the clock runs. When it hits 00:00 the game is over...

My all time favorite quote by a fan (coming from the sidelines of an all-girls HS): HEY REF...........DOES YOUR WIFE KNOW YOU ARE SCREWING US??

Along the same line as Arbitro, my all time favorite remains "Hey ref, get off your knees, you're blowing the game"

I once heard a fan yell...
"What color card is that? Is that a green card! Thats like telling them to do it again!!"
He was referring to the new neon yellow cards.
I thought it was funny and so did the stands lol

Or the time I played advantage and the team ended up scoring, then the coach yelling from the side "how about you call the foul next time ref." (umm, sir, your team just scored...you really want me to call teh foul instead?)

"You can do it!" (ala The Waterboy) - South Lafourche fan to his team
"Come on guys, you're killing me" (mom to her players) "If that's the case you'd already be dead" (dad to mom) - Vandebilt fans
Worked a tournament out near DC that attracted many of Region 1's better teams. Advantage is called but does not materialize so I come back and call the foul. Typical stuff, half of the spectators like it, the other half don't. (Don't do this at home) I try to inject some humor by turning to them and saying "That was my 50/50, next time I'll poll the audience". A few chuckles then one guy chimes in "Hey, when can you phone a friend?" so I had to come back off the cuff "I'm a ref, I don't have any friends!". Spectators are rolling with laughter.

That was a great exchange, and no doubt took care of 'crowd control' for the spectators for the rest of the game. lather

OK I'll throw out a couple. Late in the first half, frustrated coach yells out after another foul is called against his team "Are you ever going to point the other direction?" I politely say "Yes sir, next half." ;D In the middle of the second half a frustrated dad yells out "That's terrible! I could do a better job!" I reply "OK, I'll give you the whistle for the next half!" He excitedly replies "OK!" Then after a few seconds of thought, sits down shaking his head. DUH? College coach comes running down the line to me as AR1, screaming "She was not offside, she was not offside! I'll show you, I have it recorded!" I reply "Coach no matter how many time we rewind it and watch it, the flag is still going to go up, the whistle will still be blown, and the other team will still be given an IDFK." Happy are you going to write a book of quotes?

Heard a pretty good one tonight: "Come on ref. Are they playing football out there?"
My thought; "Yes, as a matter of fact they are."
