I agree it would be great to have an "all-star" referee crew doing the finals (and as many preceding rounds as possible), however that nasty filthy money stuff comes into the equation. Last night I traveled with a crew about 240 miles and the travel pay came about $270. Image a "all-star" crew from around the state doing the same game and the total coming to $1000 and this doesn't include the $170 for the game. I don't think LHSAA will be willing to spring for the money involved. Just a reality check, in this situation none of the officials would be at the site already for other puposes as they would be at a regional or other tournament event. There used to be this saying..... I believe it went something like "You get what you pay for." FIL, doesn't LSA pay travel for officials to get the best at their finals. Maybe its because they care enough to do it and the PLAYERS deserve it? In the financial report isn't the first amount to be taken from the gross money for the game set to go to LHSAA? Officials are second? Are they paying the officials or are the schools?

For the last few years LHSAA seemed to have picked the referee association to work the finals that would cost them the least amount of travel pay. I'm not commenting at all on the quality of the individual referees assigned to the games but it was pretty obvious that LHSAA didn't seem to care, as long as the travel for the ONE car wasn't too expensive.
When the finals were held in New Orleans the finals were generally spread around among the referee associations. Some of those associations sent referees that were simply a notch or two below what the games deserved. LHSAA felt it was more important to rotate the finals, no matter the quality of the referees.
I'm pretty sure Div II finals are allowed to pick whatever association the schools agree on and not who LHSAA picks, but don't bet on my knowledge of this.

LSA sends me because of my stunning good looks, abiliy to chastise referees like red-headed step children but to do it with humor, and also to avoid age discrimination lawsuits by saying "see, we sent this geezer to do games." Plus, they love he haircut!!!

During playoffs I find the scramble to get a ref crew is crazier then ever. Everyone knows that there are associations that can go deeper with referees then others, but every association has at least one top level state referee and one or two others who can do the playoff games. It's no secret that Baton Rouge and Laf. Have the most top level refs. But I know for a fact Shrev, North Shore, and N.O can field at least on top level ref crew. This isn't saying other places don't but from years of traveling in and out of state to do games these are the best. For Coaches first off there is no advantage of one association over others. The only conflict at all I can see is for the home team to not see the same refs as they have all season, but for the away team to not want to go with home teams ref association really has not bearing. If it makes you feel better then ok, that's one less thing you can blame the ref for "home cooking". Second if you have certain people that you want on the game or not on the game tell the assignor, if it is possible to accommodate usually they will. not intending to ge ino a discussion or start ranking referees, but your statement about BR and Laf having the most top rated officials is a bit off base...just as many state and nationals in the NO area as either of these areas, and a higehr number of grade 7s...and if we were picking the best in the state, the one i'd pick as my 4th has never been anything higher than a grade 8, and hasn't been USSF registered in a number of years, but is hands down just as good as anyone i've ever seen in the 4th role...he would shame 99.999% of referees when it comes to taking care of business...calm, cool, collected, you don't even realize he is there... I also hope to see the day where the best officials are put on the finals, but LHSAA will never go for that

I think I know your 4th, and I would agree 100%. A true gentleman on the sidelines who never needs to raise his voice.
I always assumed that he had been "higher" than an 8. It just seems wrong that he wasn't somehow....

D1 and D3 assigned by LHSAA, who never had a problem sending a lake charles or alexandria crew to NO for a final, but now refuses to go south of Alex fo a final crew.
D2 officials are picked by the schools. D2 plays at the "home" school, while 1 and 3 are directed by LHSAA where to play.

You only ever hear of officials from Lafayette and NOLA area that cause problems in games. Obviously, that means that the Alex and North crews must be the best in the State?
