i heard that the center ref wasn't good, anyone that was at the game want to comment on that? (fingers crossed that my post won't get removed this time) He was fine. It was a physical match. He could have called a few more fouls on both teams, but that is almost always true. The players determined the outcome of the match.

Sorry but here is a little reality. I was at the game and to tell the truth both teams played a lot of "long Ball", "direct soccer", call it what you want. Newman did put together more passes but I would hardly call the way they played tonight possesion soccer. Congrats to Newman on a very good win.

? Am I missing something? Did my post get whacked?
Sorry for disagreeing...I didn't think I had done so in any derogatory manner.
Once again, my opinion was that it was a physical, emotional game that the refs couldve contributed to positively with some form of consistency.

Article from the Shreveport Times: www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20100227/SPORTS0104/2270329/1031/SPORTS0301Newman wins title in rematchBy Kelly Morris • kmorris4@gannett.com • February 27, 2010 The Newman boys soccer team needed four overtimes to defeat University in the Division III state finals last season. Not in the rematch. The Greenies hung onto a 2-1 win in regulation Friday at Independence Stadium to earn their second Division III title in a row. They scored both goals in the first 11 minutes of the game. Jonathan Fisher scored first in the ninth minute. Then, less than two minutes later, standout forward Mason Neveu scored on an individual effort. Neveu went around one defender and snuck the ball into the net. "I thought University would come out strong, so for us to get those two quick goals settled us in," said Newman coach Matt Jacques, who has taken his team to three straight state championship games. "The first goal was a good buildup. The second goal we put in the little extra effort to get it past them." Newman had an important person on its mind Friday — Matt Savoie. Savoie was Newman's MVP in its 2-1 four-overtime win in last season's championship game. He died in a car accident in December. "We did this for Matt," Neveu said. "We saw his parents in the crowd today. It was hard." University scored its lone goal in dramatic fashion. Newman's Michael Conner got a yellow card, and University was awarded a free kick. Goalkeeper Connor Lynch took the free kick and scored from 35 yards out in the 52nd minute. "We worked on it all year," Cubs coach Chris Mitchell said. "It was no secret. He's got a great leg. It's something we always work on. It's something we get a lot of goals off of this year." The Cubs (18-6-5) continued to apply the pressure after the goal, but Newman goalkeeper David Harkins came up with four big saves, including Matt Pardue's shot on a free kick. Newman (17-6-1) had to replace nine starters this season, but its leadership returned. The Greenies' three captains have played in all three state championship games. University defeated Newman 2-0 earlier this season, but Newman was without two starters. "We had the momentum the entire second half," Mitchell said. "If we would have gotten that second goal, maybe we force overtime. I'm very proud of our team going to the finals two years in a row. We lost to an outstanding team. I was proud that our guys didn't quit."

Congratulations Newman on their well-deserved back to back state championship. University lost to a better team last night. Congratulations University and Coach Mitchell on their great run, making the Championship game two years in a row. Neither team played well, and I just wished the condition had been better (rain and cold). I didn't see any slippage by the players, but the ball went quite fast (particularly after bounces, it appeared) so that there were so many misjudgments by both teams. The game wasn't pretty in any measure. Newman, however, possessed the ball better and were able to play their own game, using wide field quite well. They scored two quick ones before University settled down. Those resulted from two of the first few shots Newman made. My hat's off to Newman for their taking advantage of few opportunities. The irony is that neither goal resulted from "possessions." One originated from a long ball and the other from University's defensive miscue and a great footwork by Neveu (some people saw a foul there, which I missed, if any). The first half was all Newman, possibly because of wind. Newman's goal was rarely threatened in the first half. The second half was a little different with wind going Cubs' way. It was more even. Early in the half, University was awarded a PK, but Newman's goalie took a chance to dive to his left and made a great save. Some fifteen minutes later, UHS goalie, Connor Lynch, took a 45 yard FK (not 35 as described in the Shreveport paper). The ball went through the crowd of players untouched. I am proud that University never quit. They made all efforts to tie the game in the last ten minutes of the game but fell a little short. Connor L. kept UHS in the game by saving two one-on-one shots. Both were great saves, and the game could have been out of reach by the half time. He was the MVP for University. I didn't see any major problem with ref. Yes, he was inconsistent a little, but who isn't? By the way, I don't remember a single offside call in this game. The atmosphere of the championship game was ... well, not great. Partly due to weather, the crowd was small. During half time, most spectators went to take covers and didn't show up at the beginning of the second half. Many didn't watch that blocked PK, probably still lining up at the concession. People in Shreveport were great and hospitable as usual. I even got a "prize" in the half time attraction (should I thank shreve50? or whoever in the bumble bee costume). ;D

Congratulations to Newman and coach Matt. They improved continiously through the season, and they proved able to adapt their game to different conditions and styles.
Soccer WINS!!! direct style will get you there but cant get over the hump...
I said it before, but I think these type comments are silly. In Newman's second game against Haynes, they trailed 0-2 at the half. They had played a "possession" type game throughout the first half, and had been unable to seriously threaten.
In the second half, Newman changed styles, and started centering high balls into the box whenever possible.. even from midfield. Result? Newman scored three goals off of headers in the first 15 mins. of the 2nd half, partly due to height mis-matches.
The definition of insanity is to continue to do what isn't working and expect a different result. It is hardhead and inflexible to criticize one style of play, and declare another method to be real "soccer."
By the way ... for consistancy, I tend to favor the two-field ref system over the one-field, two linesmen system.
I think that the one field-ref system requires more experience and athletic ability (to properly position), while the two-ref, if done properly, usually has one in good position.

Sorry Flat, I can't take credit for your prize. It was too wet for the Gator to come out last night. How ironic is that? I guess you can't ruin a new $1500 costume. Assuming the weather stays nice and dry, I'll be out there at halftime of the boys game.
