Neville 2 Bolton 1 Westminster 1 deridder 0 congrats Westminster n Neville. Good job hard work from deridder and Bolton Tough to swallow game getting called 5min early....supposed to play 30s, and although two cards issued, ref ended right on 25, right before corner taken by Bolton. Bolton had better of the play and was pressing till the end, but made two mistakes and paid for it-both great finishes for Neville. I think the readers of this board need a second opinion on the Neville/Bolton semifinal game. Of course, I am biased towards Neville, and Pokle is biased towards Bolton, but I have to respectfully disagree that Bolton had the better of the play. The possession and play was easily even, if not in Neville's favor. Neville also was missing 2 starters. One who didn't play at all in the tournament due to injury, and the other was our captain and starting CMF who was injured in the last group game against Morgan City. Neville had 9 shots in the first half, Bolton had 5. Unfortunately I have misplaced my shot stats from the second half, but as I recall, they were comparable to the first. Also, let's remember that Bolton's goal was off of a penalty kick. I am not going to say anything further about this. I will leave it up to a neutral spectator to give their opinion. However, I will say congrats to Bolton on a very well played tournament. I have been keeping up with y'all ever since your victory over Ruston, our biggest district rival, and I will continue to follow and pull for the Bears. What I will agree with Pokle on is the fact that we did play 25 minute halves and that was a surprise to me, too. Semifinal and final games were supposed to be 30 minutes. I can't believe the ref didn't allow that corner at the end of the game. Bolton got jipped there. Also, I'd like to thank Chad and all the people involved in putting on this fantastic tournament. All of the players, coaches, and parents really appreciate all of the hard work, and no doubt the pressure that you all have in putting this together.

I'd like to offer a few words of encouragement and affirmation to a plucky Ouachita Christian (OCS) team who hung in there and played their Copa games well despite formidable odds against them.
No one could have predicted when OCS committed to the Copa tournament last spring that their football team would play (and win) the 1A semifinal on Friday night of the tournament, so they'd be playing without their football players. Nor could they have predicted that in August they would lose their long-time coach (Bruce Deaton, who is now the Louisiana College women's soccer coach), which leaves them without an in-house soccer advocate in a school where soccer is (at best) a second class sport.
So OCS played with 11 players on Friday and 12 players on Saturday, including 3 eighth graders. Even so, they played credible games against Haynes and Menard, and were predictably beaten solidly by the eventual champion, Westminster.
OCS didn't win a game, and they didn't score a goal, but they took the field and played. For that the players and their coach, Bill Chapman, have my admiration. That's the stuff that reflects character and builds more. Well done.

I'm glad that both sides think they played well ... I know some games one team doesn't show up and the result isn't necessarily an accurate indicator. I'm not sure about the possession ... and my last comment is that shots don't tell the whole picture (although indicative of hits directly at goal) - i remember a couple crosses going directly through the six for bolton in the first, which although not finished toward goal are as good as some "shots" as indicating offensive presence (even though not statistically tracked) - i also remember Neville's keeper coming up with some big saves in the end off dangerous balls about to be finished on goal. Neville too has a bright future (esp considering missing two starters in Copa).

FIFA rules are the foundation for high school rules. Not any of your HS refs would or should allow a player to charge into goalkeeper who had two hands on the ball and dislodge it from the keepers hands. A physical challenge towards a goalkeeper should be called a foul at the moment the goalkeeper has possesion of the ball in order to protect the goalkeeper who is at a naturally perilous situation. In this situation Christian Lara had both hands gripped on the ball and the player barreled into him. I was on the sidelines of this feild while warming up for my game when i saw this play, the EHS player jumped in the air just as keeper did, both reached the ball at the same time and although it may have "touched" the keepers gloves, he by no means had possecion of the ball, which should have resulted in a "play on" situation which in this case resulted in a goal.

A really good tournament for our team - this weekend Menard won two games and tied one game against an excellent Westminster team (the eventual winner!)
Menard did not have a single goal scored against them the entire weekend. Westminster advanced from the bracket over Menard after the 2nd or 3rd tiebreaker. Not bad considering we have only 4 starters returning from last season!
I could not be more proud of our team. Congratulations to all the Central Louisiana teams (Menard, ASH and Bolton) and keep up the good work!

For there to be a "play on", isn't there suppose to be a foul? And if there is a foul, what advantage was earned to justify a "play on" in this situation? I saw the play. I think if the keeper had possession of the ball or not it was still a foul. It appeared to me the keeper jumped straight up and the Baton Rouge player came running in and played through the player. If you replace the keeper with a field player, the field player would have headed the ball out then got run over by the Baton Rouge player which would have resulted in a free-kick for Parkway. But this is my opinion. You can see this play from 10 different angles and get 10 different opinions.

I agree bisoccerfan. What i mean by "play on" was that the referee should have allowed play to continue instead of calling a foul. This was a very hard call to make especially in an intense and evenly matched game. No ref is going to get all of the calls right in a game and in this situation he respected the keepers saftey more than the EHS player. Could have gone either way (just glad it didnt happen to my team).

What I said is that OCS was predictably solidly beaten by Westminster. I watched the Menard v Westminster game. Westminster had the majority of possession, especially in the second half. The Menard defense did an excellent job to keep it to a 0-0 tie.

I know TonyGalinto doesn't like me quoting FIFA laws on the high school forum but since high school rules originated and were modified from FIFA laws, I will state how the definition of possession is used in soccer. FIFA says the goalkeeper "may be fairly charged if going for the ball other than with his/her hands. The goalkeeper may not be charged while holding ball, or having possession of the same." The FIFA definition of “possession” in Law 12, IFAB Decision 2 is as follows: “The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball by touching it with any part of his hand or arms..." The only high school rule difference is even more restrictive when speaking to charging the goalkeeper: "Keeper cannot be charged in his penalty area unless dribbling ball with his feet or obstructing."
Either way, Christian Lara was jumping upright on the goal line in the goal box (area) with his hands on the ball extended in the air as he was charged by the player. I hope this explains why this should be an easy foul to call and no goal. I hope that referees don't "see this play from 10 different angles and get 10 different opinions" as bigsoccerfan stated. The laws and rules are certain with this situation when the ball touches the goalkeeper's hands.

I've always liked him, both as a player and a coach. no offense but if he is one of the "most qualified" referees In the state maybe there is just no hope for much of refereeing talent anymore, In the Vandebilt St.Louis semi final he handed out the whole coaching staff yellow cards when only one coach was yelling, with good reason for it I might add, I was pretty appalled sitting and watching kids battle the opponent but also the ref on top of that....Js
