Forgive me for this one, but given recent censoring on this board and complaints by some folks, the NUMBER ONE defender is known as "The Whistle". Stops play ever time... In retrospect, would make a great nickname for a shutdown defender. aliceshoe1, that is perfect - we have a title now - "The Whistle Awards" - Best defenders in the state Would this award be for the defender who has the most fouls!?!?!?

Chelsea B and Brooke B - Lakeshore High - awesome players. Several shutouts this year and it was not because of Lakeshore's goalie. LHS goalie does an amazing job considering she is not a club player, it's actually quite amazing.

I don’t care how good your defenders are, if you do not have adequate midfielders and forwards who can control the ball and keep the ball away from the defense, eventually you’re going to have breakdowns in the defense. This whole topic is nonsense.

This whole topic is nonsense. Lordsoccer, great statement and I love your candid, but true, observation! I think the majority of this post (and site) is banter for fun and opinions (and we know what they're worth), mainly adults refreshing our competitive spirits in writing since we're all has-beens or wannabe's and for the sake of argument. Many of us have nothing better to do at times, myself included. But it eventually goes back to the team mentality and balance. Many of us want to put our teams or babies' names in lights. You still gotta love all of this no matter which side you look at it from! It creates excitement, involvement, discussion for a great sport.

This whole topic is nonsense. Why is this topic nonsense? - Why do the attackers/scorers always get board time - why can't the defenders?

I agree. My daughter is a defender. Her team had a great game the other night. Her friends at school asked the next morning "so did you score a goal?" When she replies "no" they just look at her like she is not a good player. They don't care that the defense shut down a pair of fabulous forwards.

I agree that the defenders get very little glory, and most of the blame. I coach both school and club and build both from the back forward. All that said we all know that without the middle of the field you aren't helping your defense stay out of pressure, and without forwards its hard to score. Offense fills seats defense wins championships. But it would be fun to have both..

Leah Aultman from St. Joe's Academy is a beast of a defender. She also mixes an offensive threat in from anywhere inside about 45 yards out. Very accurate and powerful strike!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will start the push for Melanie Rabeaux of Lafayette High (#18 I think). She ran down a girl for Dominican on the right side of the field on a breakaway and forced her to pass the ball to a girl breaking on the left side and got to her and kicked the ball away from her as well. If you were at the game tonight you witnessed a contender for defensive player of the year. She marked #4 and they battled all night long until they adjusted and dropped her to midfield where she finally got some breathing room. If you've played against her or have seen her play you would have to agree that she is definitely one of the best defenders if not "the best" defender in the state in Division I.
