To me, this was a textbook case in favor of athleticism, speed, and finishing over "the beautiful game." Question: was BF missing the tall striker?
Probably someone will claim BF controlled the game. But as good as BF was/is this year, they lack finishing, and their game plan doesn't penetrate. This was evident when they struggled somewhat in district play, being extended before winning close games twice against Lusher and once against Haynes.
Defense has been suspect this year, especially some spotty work in goal... good save, and then spectate while the ball is being served or driven in. The back line, for all their good ball handling, gets extended when forced into back-peddle by direct passing and loses contact with each other... part of the problem with a flat four intended to move the ball laterally. They did have a good defensive run in the playoffs though.
BF moves their players around from game to game. In this game, I wonder why played their two best players on the wings, moving Vanja out? #7 Talman has been winger all year, and has been pretty much a non-factor except on occasion... shut out to dance down the sidelines. But then when he creates a chance he won't pull the trigger, prefers to keeps dancing.
#10 Vanja's foot speed was exposed by the little guy marking him. Using Vanja on the wing meant his quick foot was usually only in a support-assist role. Two or three times these two players created chances in the first half that did not even require a save, ball cleared without a shot on goal. In the middle of the field, both players could use their good skills to create more direct chances in my opinion.
Still, a good season for BF. Next year they say goodbye to Div-III. I think they will have to penetrate and take quick chances a lot more than they are accustomed to this year. Good luck to BF, congratulations on a fine run at the end of the season.

Was sitting behind the goal on the end NCS scored the 1st two goals. Corner was the right call onthe first one, and the quick restart on the 2nd was smart play by NCS. No one asked for 10 yards And the referee did not signal for a ceremonial restart.

Now, I'd agree this 2nd goal just scored off free kick was "controversial" in that BF was caught snoozing during the free kick/subsequent goal. Crafty! NCS 2-0 BF M Unit Does not require a whistle, ball is in play when it is stopped at the spot. Good awareness. I was right on top of first corner-goal, corner call was correct... however there were two offsides calls on fast breaks against NLC that were pretty marginal (and one on BF, same end in the 2nd half), and I was on the first row, just about level with the call. Other end of field, very early on, NLC keeper was hammered... it looked pretty bad from my end, but I was a long way away from the play. I thought the game was well officiated... maybe let a little much go early on, sneaky stuff mostly.

Boomer,
Maybe you should spend this much time critiquing your own team as much as you do franklin, and then maybe they'll be in the same league...one day

Had a great time hanging out with coachm90 the entire match, and caught up w/LoJic & pOkLE in 2nd half. Of course, goalieguy was there, too, playing GK for NCS. What a great LaPrep representation tonight!
Congrats to BF & especially NCS for great seasons! Well done, Coach Nick.
See y'all tomorrow night. Look for the Unit.

"Slayer," seems like "my team" was "in the same league" with BF in their first season, were they not? Feel free to contradict anything factual I'vd said this year. Perhaps I was wrong to single out individuals... but i did it because they are the talent of the team, and I think they could be more productive.
I've commented objectively to the best of my ability on the nuts-and-bolts of many games including Newman, Country Day, Lusher, Westminster, Menard, et. al. ... but it is strictly my opinion and observation, not hard facts. To be honest, while I was watching the game tonight as objectively as I could, I was mildly rooting for BF to keep the championship in District 9.
In addition to my critique of certain facets of BF team play... which is a compliment to them if you read the way it is intended, ... I suggest getting the team administration in order. Mighty hard to contact this year and on occasion difficulties arose that are... well, enough said. Part of a first class program (which BF is, by the way) means following the LHSAA guidelines.
I would enjoy your presentation of your take on the game. That would be more germane than posting unrelated comments designed simply to denigrate other program. Why you feel that was necessary is beyond me.
Sir, (Ben) frankly, in two years I have can't remember reading a single comment from a BF poster on this board that congratulates, praises, or gives any other team much credit for anything, including our playoff win. You've managed to keep that streak intact.

Boomer, I agree that the sandwich on the keeper early in the match looked hard, but I was sitting only 135 yards away, so my view was likely worse than yours. I would say that NCS was the more physical of the 2. #7 for BF was fast and they should have used that speed to their advantage. Was not impressed by #10 for BF, although everyone is entitled to a bad game, he did not live up to the hype. Of course, every time he touched the ball he had at least 2 NCS players on him. #11 for NCS is a freshman, so watching him for 3 more years will be fun.

To me, the biggest controversy on the 2nd goal is that the foul call never should have been made in the first place...that was really, really soft. Several have pointed out that no one asked for ten yards, but my perception was that the referee was backing up the wall anyway, in which case the kick would have had to wait. But this was just my perception, and I could be mistaken about how the ref was handling it. Several unbiased watchers also thought the referee signaled for indirect, but I myself did not notice. All in all, the second goal seemed pretty cheap to me and a bit of a mess as far as how the situation was handled, especially considering that Franklin had a strong penalty appeal turned down just moments earlier when Vanja went down in the box from contact from behind. And it's a shame, because the second goal really killed the game in my opinion. I do want to point out that even though I think the referee messed up a little bit on the second goal, he did a great job of consulting with his linesman and doing everything in his power to try to get the call correct. It was after a couple minutes of deliberation before play was restarted, and it's good to see the referee crew use each other for help in such a big game.
Now with all that being said, the better team clearly won this game. Ben Franklin was sloppy in possession, forcing passes into spaces that weren't there and dribbling excessively (sometimes straight into pressure), whereas NLC took advantage of their opportunities and created much better chances, even in periods when Franklin had the edge in possession. In the end, Franklin's possession resulted in almost no penetration the entire night, because they almost always gave the ball away at some point in their passing and NLC's defense remained disciplined. NLC was aggressive, intense, and motivated from the very beginning and deservedly took the momentum very early on. The second goal, which was cheap in my opinion, played a big part in NLC keeping the momentum, but in the end you cannot deny that NLC thoroughly deserved to win this game. I wasn't blown away by the quality of this game, but it was a very interesting game in which both teams fought really, really hard, and in which the better team came out on top.
