Seriously fellow refs, some of you really make it tough for the rest of us when you allow a school to play an entire season without anchoring the goals and gaping holes in the nets. Right off the bat the coach thinks we are being hard *sses when we ask the nets be secured/anchored. Why would you not require that beginning with the first game of the season?

So let me get this right:
-You detest your assignor for what you perceive is an injustice -You detest your fellow referees for their practice (although, rightfully so) -You detest fans who have called you some interesting names lately
Anyone on your "nice" list this upcoming Winter?

Naw, just asking for professionalism on the first two, something that should be a desire for all of us. The third is just for fun.

Have to agree with Dulac on this one. I remember going to A match one year for a playoff match, and as we were walking the filed, one penalty area is 19 yards, the other was 16. I asked the coach if he wanted to fix it now, or move the match to a later date to give home more time. He was not happy that no one caught. It all year, including a playoff match that had already played there. He fixed it, but with much grumbling.
So, I'm perceived as a hard ass by the coach because I wanted the field marked properly.

Had to post a reply to this one because I've always been told that you play the field the way it is marked and notify the coach and/or state of problems so that they can be corrected. I decided to check the rule book before I opened my mouth, and the situation is actually addressed in the NFHS rules (1.2.6). According to NFHS, the lines shall be played as marked with corrections to be made before next match. It can make for some interesting matches at times. I've seen fields that are clearly not layed out with 90 degree angles and touchlines that look like the guy who painted them was being chased by wasps.
Unsecured goals are different. It's a safety hazard. If not properly anchored, you're not supposed to start the match.

Funny but true.

And since we hadn't played, notified the coach and he fixed it before the next match, which started in an hour.

you get there way too early. If you did like the rest of us, and turned up three minutes before game time, there would not be time to repaint the field. You make your own problems by turning up early.

As a parent, I say please make sure goals are secure. Crooked lines aren't going to cause bodily harm to anyone. Straight ones are nicer but we can live with crooked if we have to. A goal falling on a kid is a whole different story.

It only hurts the one it falls on, so you have a less than 5% chance of it being your kid...

I don't want to see anyone's child get hurt especially by something that could easily be prevented. I know soccer is a sport and can result in injuries but defective equipment shouldn't be the reason.
Even if it isnt my kid or her teammates, it isn't acceptable. I would even be upset if it fell on the ref.

" I would even be upset if it fell on the ref."
ROTFL
Seriously Mom, I totally agree. Just a few weeks ago a little boy was killed by an unsecured goal.

Most refs are far from harm's way in the safety of the center circle.

Just remember that those kids running around are their family's world...
Imagine you are at a game and have to watch someone's child carried off the field... You know you could have prevented it... Imagine then facing that child's parents at the funeral home and explaining why the goal wasn't anchored....
Being called a hard butt doesn't seem like a big deal... If a coach gives you a hard time for this, ask him or her if their players parents know that they would rather have one of their players hurt or killed rather than delay the game. Bet that will shut them up.
Please if you get nothing else right (I know you do- not meant as an insult), get this right every time.

Mom-they're yanking your chain. Most referees take this seriously and ensure goals are anchored.

As a point also: safety is everyone's responsibility. Parents generally drive their kids to the fields (not just school). Y'all will be milling around for a while before games. Please check the goals are anchored. By being proactive, you can prevent the kids from playing / warming up in goals that are not securely anchored before the refs even get there. Oftentimes, we are coming straight from one field to the next game. Parents are usually there at least 30 minutes before kickoff.

I got a shilling that it was futbolislife who left the goals unanchored.

Now how did I get pulled into this conversation? Everyone knows that I am too old, too fat and too slow to do High School anymore. Shoot, did I check that U8 goal last weekend?
