To ensure everything is being updated on time we have decided this is the best way to give you all a great tool to navigate through. loJic NOTE: The link should now open it directly in LIST view (and save you from making that change when you open it). If it doesn't work, just follow the initial instructions below.p_malinichLet us know if it's working.

Last year, we upgraded the tools to allow for faster calculation and release of both standings and power ratings. This year, the biggest change to the tools is the elimination of the 8 pages of lists in the LA Prep boards of the individual team schedules. WHY?We've replaced them with the ability to get to the information with an increase in speed and accuracy. 1) You will no longer need to page through the individual lists to find the desired team. 2) The results will be updated at the same time as games are entered (no more lag to enter same data into multiple locations). 3) By entering it in only 1 location and making accessible elsewhere, we should be able to reduce data entry errors. It will involve some change, but it should serve everyone's needs once we get through the learning curve. Starting this season, ALL of the games (past & future) will now be included in 1 location in GoogleDocs. See tutorial (below) for further explanation. The past games will be used to generate standings and power ratings. The future games will be available so that you can view the entire schedule of a team, all games on a particular date, etc. Additional suggestions are welcomed! And for those of you on the GIRLS side, this same tool will be coming out for you as well this year (very soon).

Here's a walkthrough of how to use the upgraded GoogleDoc tool and the info available with it. If something doesn't work, message me & I'll either fix it or help you to understand it. 1) Click on the "2012-2013 Standings & Power Ratings" link above to open the GoogleDoc spreadsheet. You should be able to access everything without a Google account. 2) A spreadsheet with 3 tabs will open up. As of 11/15, the link should now open it directly in LIST view (and save you from making that change when you open it). You want the view with the tabs at the top of page rather than bottom.- If it doesn't work, click on VIEW and then select LIST (instead of Normal). The layout will change, but don't panic. The tab names will show at the top of page & you will have a drop-down arrows in every column.
3) Depending upon what you want to see/do, go to the appropriate tab: A) Standings - Shows Overall, District, and Division records and more (sorted by district) B) Schedules & Results - Displays all games. You can choose just 1 team by using the drop-down arrows and will see only their schedule (and results, once they start to occur). As scores get included, the winner of the game will also be displayed in the right-most column. C) Power Ratings - Just as it sounds. We need to determine how often that will be updated, but that's where you'll find the latest information. 4) Some general tips about using GoogleDocs spreadsheet (while in LIST view): - By clicking on the header of any column, you will re-sort the table based on that field. Click again to switch from ascending to descending.
- To filter out data, click on the drop-down arrow in the desired field & select the item (school name, date, etc.) that you want and all other rows will be hidden. Note that you can do this with more than one column at a time.
- Since you don't have edit rights, when you close the file or switch between tabs, any filtering, etc. that you did will be reset.
Final note: Non-LHSAA (primarily out of state) games are included on the Schedules & Results tab, but they are NOT included in any calculations of standings, ratings, etc.

One of the nuances to keep in mind with this approach of a consolidated schedule is that games will show on the list even if only 1 of the teams has it on their schedule.
Since we're combining all submitted schedules & eliminating the duplicates, it is POSSIBLE that Team A thinks they're playing Team B and puts them on their schedule. If Team B never agreed or if they forgot, they don't have it on their schedule. However, when Team A submits their schedule, the game will show up on the consolidated schedule and appear to be on BOTH teams' schedules.
It will get cleared up eventually since by the end of the season, only games played will be listed, but early on it could be misleading. In order to help us with data accuracy as well as identifying miscommunication between your team and other teams, periodically use the filter to check YOUR team out to make sure that there aren't any unintended games on your schedule.

We've received lots of positive feedback on the GoogleDocs tool.
The biggest omission was in not identifying the home team. We believe we have a solution & you should see it show up in the next day or so in the column that currently lists the tournament names. That column will become Home/Host (instead of notes).

Results! 9 games results from Day 1 have been posted by loJic to the GoogleDoc spreadsheet.
Standings You can see immediately the WLT standings for each team (grouped by district). If your team is highlighted in red, it means that you have submitted your schedules yet. Please follow instructions at top of this thread to do so.
Schedules You can filter for a team's schedule and if it's score has been updated, it already shows as part of their schedule (much more quickly & easier than the 8 pages where it used to be reported). Home team is now being identified and will soon expand to be reflected for all of the season.
Power Ratings You can also see the first release of Power Ratings (since these are live). The 8 teams that won are tied for 1st, the 2 teams that tied are in 9th, and the 8 teams that lost are in 11th. Everyone else that hasn't played sits tied in 19th place. No need to start debating those numbers yet.
Test it out! So if you haven't kicked the tires yet, please do so. A lot of training info on how to use is listed above, but ask questions & we'll help guide you thru it. It really is easy once you start to work with it. And if the data for your school isn't right, please let us know so that we can work to correct it. (We've had some issues of discrepancies on when/if schools were intending to play each other.)

Latest improvement to the tool... (again, thanks to a user for the question about making the change)
NOTE: The link above should now open the spreadsheet directly in LIST view (and save you from making that change when you open it). If it doesn't work, just follow the initial instructions above.
Please let us know if it's working.

There is a current proposal that will determine wildcards based on Power Ratings (starting next year). The proposal involves a different calculation than we've been using. Proposed LHSAA Power RatingsFor a WIN, you get 10 points + # of opponent's wins. For a TIE, you get 5 points + 75% of # of opponent's wins. For a LOSS, you get 0 points + 50% of # of opponent's wins. You can see more of the history and discussion at: Power Ratings threadSince this is what is being considered use as the basis for selecting wildcards next year, we are going to change the calculations to start to use this method (over the next few days). We will begin to sort primarily on this calc (so we can get used to it) and will change the display to put the new proposed LHSAA method first. Will it cause significant changes?I took the latest file I had and compared the current LHSAA calc (which used to distinguish shootout wins/losses from other wins/losses) and compared it to calcs under the proposed calculation. Impact?- 81 of the 148 boys teams (55%) changed 2 positions or less
- 7 teams would fall 10 or more positions: Comeaux (-16), Bonnabel (-13), Catholic BR (-12), McKinley (-11), East St. John (-11), Grace King (-10), and Neville (-10)
- 5 teams would move up 10 or more positions: Evangel (26), Glenmora (15), Belle Chasse (14), John Ehret (12), and Ruston (10)
So stay tuned & you'll see the GoogleDocs catch up with the proposed calculations. I would encourage your discussion to take place over on the Power Ratings thread

Here's a perfect example of why to help find missing/unknown scores.
loJic just posted all of John Ehret's season. When we last published GoogleDocs (yesterday a.m.), they had 4 wins. They now have 10 wins.
So when we next publish GoogleDocs, every one of their opponents received credit for those 6 wins in their Power Ratings.
It's important! Help to make sure YOUR opponents and YOUR team have full schedules/results submitted.

Please continue to review your schedules on GoogleDocs. I updated last night around midnight & will do the same tonight.
I keep getting messages about missed games, corrections, unknown results, etc.
So the standings are doing some dancing. Keep checking your position (as well as your schedule).
Thanks!

Hope it's ok if I bump this up to the front page in case anyone wants to do a tiny bit of research on opponents or for whatever reason.
