Congrats to EHS on a great season and a great game last night. They came out with not only the desire to win but the confidence as well. Their intensity in the first few minutes earned them a goal, but it was highly unfortunate for Newman. Ball slips out of the hands of a defender with nobody around him, so he panics and kicks it upfield (a reaction I think many of us would have in such an intense match). This earns EHS an indirect kick from a dangerous position which they put into the back of the net. EHS player shoots on goal and chips the goalie just getting it under the cross bar... but wasn't it indirect? If you look at the pictures on the LAprepsoccer page (I hope this counts as crediting them), you will find this picture. Newman goalie did not touch the ball, but the ref said he did making the goal count. Based on the intensity with which EHS came out, I think they still could've scored in the next few minutes, but this one shouldn't have counted. Sorry if this sounds like sour grapes, the better team won last night, but I just think this is a shame that should be pointed out...

In all fairness, that is a still picture. While I'm not 100% sure, I thought keeper touched the ball when I saw it live. Both ball and keeper were moving toward goal so I'm not sure that picture captures the moment where keeper was closest to/touching ball. I'm sure someone has video and can conclusively tell us.

Hard to really tell. Still pictures, like pOkle points out, only show a snapshot of what happened. I took the picture, but I couldn't tell you one way or the other if the keeper touched the ball. The photo makes it look like he did not, but the keeper might not be at the top of his jump, so the next frame might have shown him grazing the ball with his fingers. Anyone know if the keeper claims he did not touch it?

pOKLE,
No offense, but how can you question a photo that clearly shows the ball not touching (not even close) as it sails directly over the keeper's hand. If the photo was of the ball behind the keeper, you may have an argument. Clearly a wrong call by the referee, who had to consult the AR prior to making it. The call was immediately challenged (to no avail) by Newman's coach.

Taking a still shot of a play and making the comments above is like watching a Jerry Springer show. The reaction of the keeper after the play confirms the touch. Great game last night.

The call was immediately challenged (to no avail) by Newman's coach. I think I was pretty low key on my pointing out that the picture does not accurately show situation. Keeper didn't jump straight up. As the next frames would have shown, both keeper (esp his hand/arm) and ball moved closer to the goal. It is quite easy to argue both points and I think both are supported by the picture. With that said, seeing it live, I immediately thought he touched it, as did the AR and presumably the center. It will take more than the still picture and someone telling me I can't argue something reasonable to make me change my mind.

That's at least the 2nd time this season (I remember seeing it mentioned on the girls' side a few months ago) where a keeper touched an indirect FK and it led to a goal that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. Somewhat surprising, IMO, because it requires two mistakes--the attacker has to make the mistake of shooting at the goal, and the keeper has to make the mistake of touching it.

I have a hand held video of Cody's goal and have watched it only once but pretty sure it shows the keeper touching the ball. I will try to post video Monday.
