Coming off an All-Metro soccer season in 1988, Hahnville goalie Brian Martin didn't get off to an All-Metro start in 1989.
But, oh what a finish.
Martin allowed only five goals in eight district games and had four shutouts as Hahnville won District 7.
And, Martin reclaimed his spot on the All-Metro team.
He was joined on the team by MVP Sean Jeanfreau and Shane Jeanfreau of De La Salle; Mike Malone, Petur Jonsson and David Bonson of Slidell; Bruce Unangst and Matt Graham of Northshore; Paysse McWilliams of Mandeville; John Shylock of O.Perry Walker; Richard Burvant of Jesuit and Andy McLetchie of Ben Franklin.
"I was a little surprised I made it again," said Martin, a 5-foot-7, 133-pound senior. "We started off badly and some people were telling me I wasn't going to make it again. But I promised my coach I would."
Playing the toughest competition they could find, the Tigers were winless in non-district games, but won seven of eight in league play to sweep to the title.
"He dominated this season in district play," said Hahnville Coach Art Aucoin. "I think he had an even better year than last year. He started slow, but that was because we were playing some of the better teams in the area."
Hahnville may have put itself in that class, winning the district title in the program's second year. It was the first district championship by a boys team at Hahnville in eight years.
"We had an awesome defense, which helped a lot," Martin said. "They took a lot of pressure off of me. I knew I could count on them.
"I was a lot more confident this year, too. I was more aggressive. I stopped thinking about it and started doing it."
Sean Jeanfreau , a senior, guided De La Salle to a 20-2 record and the District 9 title with a 12-0 mark. He led the team with 45 goals and 12 assists.
Jeanfreau has been selected Most Valuable Player on The Times-Picayune All-Metro soccer team.
Slidell boys coach Seamous Diamond, who led the Tigers to their second consecutive state championship and fourth in six years, is the Coach of the Year.
Northshore's James Scott is the girls Coach of the Year, and the Panthers' Jennifer Grien is the MVP. Northshore won its fourth straight state championship this year.
Other girl's All-Metro team members are Missy Moffett, Stephanie Alligood and Natalie Guidry of Northshore; Kelly Ryan, Ann Felder and Kristine Matthews of Slidell; Kathryn-McColl Simons, Holly Wrighton and Elizabeth Bolles of Newman; Stacy Boydston of Mandeville; Kim Krajewski of Pope John Paul II; Mary Marshall Seaver and Tarry Kelly of Country Day; and Kelly McGeehan of St. Martin's.
In six years, Diamond compiled a 63-4-3 record, including 11-0 this year. Slidell won the District 6 championship and defeated cross-town rival Northshore 2-0 for the state title.
Shane Jeanfreau is a returning All-Metro selection. He finished second on the team with 23 goals.
Martin allowed an average of 0.66 goals and recorded four shutouts in eight district games to earn his second straight All-Metro berth.
Unangst is also a returning All-Metro selection. His best game this season came against Covington, when he scored five goals.
Graham led Northshore's defense.
Malone was a four-year starter for the Tigers.
Jonsson and Bonson began the season on the bench for Slidell but earned starting berths. Jonsson had a second-half goal in the state championship victory against Northshore.
Shylock had 12 goals and 15 assists from his forward position. He had hat tricks - three goals - against Riverdale and Andrew Jackson.
McWilliams of Mandeville and Burvant of Jesuit controlled their teams' defenses.
McLetchie was the top defensive player for Ben Franklin, which had 10 shutouts in 16 regular-season games.
Grein is one of six returning selections on the girl's team, and Scott is the Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
Grein and Alligood, seniors, never lost a soccer game and were a part of the team's 56-game winning streak.
Grein was a playmaker from the midfield position, and helped set up the Panthers' offense.
