Are the formulas used to calculate Power Ratings here on LaPrep the same that were approved by the LHSAA to be used next season? Essentially yes. There were 2 proposals (Power Ratings & Ties Allowed in District) that both passed. For this year, we did the calculations as if they would both pass. There's extended discussion throughout this thread & the Power Ratings Proposal thread if you want to dive into more details. Thanks. A few follow up questions: 1) What is the formula? 2) Is it true DII will go to 32 playoff spots next year but still have only 38 teams in the Division until the 2015-2016 season? 3) Besides 1st place in district, are the other playoff spots determined on Power Rating alone? 4) Did I read somewhere that there is no bonus/penalty for playing up/down from your Division?

LionsCoach is right on with his answers. #2 is very unclear to me. I posted that presumption about 38 teams & 32 making it for one year asking for someone to correct me if I'm missing something. No one has yet (although that doesn't mean it's right). It does appear that based on current approvals, that is what would happen (although I don't think that was the intent). My other comments (8 in total) about what the passing of these key proposals can be found on page 4 of the thread to which LionsCoach has already provided the link.

Sigh. D-III power ratings exposed, boys and girls, up and down the order. Quite depressing. Oh well ... (to be clear, I am not concerned with where my school was ranked or seeded. It was fine either way ... just the obvious inequalities throughout the order caused by math issues that will skew the brackets in the future.)
I thought coach seeding was excellent in D-III this year.

Exposed as what? Power ratings are just that -- ratings. They give an indication based on a set formula of how well the team has performed to date. They do not provide predictions and never have been intended to provide predictions.
There will always be bracket issues under any system. The system is MUCH better now than it was 10 or 15 years ago, when more than once we had teams that could have (and probably would have) ended up in the championship game playing in the Regional Round. I'm sure as this system is used, over time, slight adjustments will be made. Nonetheless, the system, IMO, has been excellent, especially at identifying the top 8 teams and ensuring that they meet later on in the playoffs, and not in the first two rounds.

That is really what we can all wish for... Get the quarters right for the most part and get the right teams all in at the beginning... It may be a work in progress, but it is improving every year.

For the answer to how many Division II teams will be in playoffs next season... The way the wording on the passed power ratings proposal is, was meant to include all passed items, including the 3 equal divisions proposal that was passed in Jan 2013 to go into effect on next reclass which goes into effect 2015-16 season. So it may be one of those things where it fell though the cracks and if enforced as written, there would be 32 teams in the current Division II for the next year. The following seasons will have 3 equal divisions with 32 team playoffs in each so the way it is written now is perfect for that period. So it will depend on how LHSAA enforces it. It will just give the Division II top 8 teams a first round game instead of a bye which actually may be better than sitting for 8-12 days, depending on weather. Plus it gives 8 more teams a chance to play at least one more game.
