I again find myself appalled at what I have witnessed at a Fontainebleau High School soccer match. It seems that every time that I have the pleasure of crossing paths with FHS spectators, I am consistently disappointed that no one has done anything to address their poor sportsmanship--not their coaches, athletic director, principal, nor the school board.
While I could go on and on about how disrespectful the FHS spectators consistently behave toward referees, I don't have the time. I'll just briefly talk about the one particular call that got them really worked up tonight--an Offside decision that denied them the opportunity to tie the game. I can completely understand how someone who is unfamiliar with Offside could mistake the decision for a bad call, but long story short, the girl in question became involved in active play by attempting to kick the ball while standing in the goalkeeper's line of vision. It doesn't matter that she missed. Period. Good call all day. I wish to simply offer that as fans, you usually aren't familiar with the totality of the Laws and Rules that accompany your child's sport. This includes the dads who identify themselves as "referees" because they took the class once but never worked any competitive games or received any further training. Leave the officials alone. They got this one right.
As an unbiased spectator who is not affiliated with either team, I can say that both Fontainebleau and Mandeville played well tonight, and the officials made clutch calls when they needed to. As far as the sportsmanship issue goes, I hope that ALL Louisiana schools start to crack down on disrespectful (and frankly, ignorant) spectators and begin to protect officials more. To the students who think that yelling at a referee is funny, if only you knew how ignorant and disrespectful you sound. If I had to make an assumption about all FHS students based on the behavior of the few who attended this game, I would think that they were all obnoxious punks. And to the parents who try to one-up each other's referee insults, y'all are teaching that nonsense to your children, and they're not exactly turning out to be little angels. Set good examples, and put yourself in someone else's shoes before you scream at them.
Be nice.
