So I am assuming that if ref feels it was a protective reaction- ball coming in hard from not too far away then he would probably not call handling. And that kinda proves my point... two highly qualified refs (making that assumption ) would make different call based on same information. Parents get Happy one game and that call goes against their team. Same thing happens in later game to other team and time2retire doesn't make call.
I understand both rationale and neither is wrong but this is what leads to some of the frustration on the field. Although hollering at ref rarely if ever changes a refs call.

Rarely have I seen coaches or players act like the parents that disagree with the call and they are the ones involved in the game. The vast majority of parents (including myself) didnt grow up in the game and so our understanding isnt quite up the level to be criticizing the officials. We know just enough to be dangerous.

There is also the caveat of what is the level and nature of the game? If it is a U-12 rec game, for me to call handling, a player pretty much has to jump up and catch the ball with both hands. For an adult D1 game, I would call it closer to Happy's level. And, just because nobody else has mentioned it, if there is no benefit to the player or team that handles the ball, there may be no reason to call it.
I had an example in a State Cup game a few years back where a 13/14 year old girl instinctively put her hands up and pretty much caught the ball (she had been in goal in the first half). She immediately dropped the ball, it bounced off her foot and rolled ever so slowly into the goal. No reason to call anything, other than a goal. Parents not happy for both teams: some wanted a penalty kick instead of the goal, some wanted a red card, some wanted both a goal and the red card.

Yeah if you had called a pk instead amd they missed....
I agree about parents knowing enough to be dangerous. We try to figure things out and just when we think we do- a call or non-call happens and it frustrates.
At games- I am trying to get in the mindset of it is whatever ref says cause at end of day- that's true for this game.

but this is what leads to some of the frustration on the field. Frustration on the field comes from inconsistency by a referee. If the first time you set the bar for what is/isn't handling, or a foul, or anything else, and maintain that through the game, there is not much left to frustrate a player or coach, except their play or that of their team. I really don't care if parents are frustrated or have no idea what I'm calling, I'm not there for them. Parents are like nets, you don't need them to have a game.

Ha!
True.... I think sometimes the inconsistency comes from a ref starting with a let em play mentality and sees the game getting out of hand so they start calling things they weren't earlier.
However, I would rather that than let it continue to get out of hand even if those first calls go against my team. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using proboards

I've yet to have a parent come up after a game and ask me to explain a law they didn't understand...but I've had more than enough tell me what a poor job I did...and to be fair, I've had plenty also tell me I did a good job.
