Just curious when you thought a player should be settled into a position? Or is that ever really important?
Sparked by conversation with my daughter.... she wasour team's primary keeper but we picked up another so now they split time. My daughter is loving field time again but said she doesn't know what to say when people ask what position she plays. She plays it all but forward. I thought this was probably a good thing but she said that a few people had told her that she should be playing only one.
Just curious on your take.... I told her if she was happy playing multiple roles and her coach was pleased then that's all the matters but is it?

My daughter is the same way. She has always played goalie until last year when she was sharing time in goal. She started playing defense and loves it, but she is now back in goal. She plays defense for ODP. I just love watching her play any where her coach puts her.

Mine was always a field player- mostly defense or defensive mid. She started playing keeper for middle school team and then did training with club. Two years ago- club coach started working with her to overcome some fears about playing in goal. Last year and half she was full-time keeper.
High school she played all over- keeper, defense, and wing. She plays defense, wing, and keeper on club. I think it's probably good for her development but we have looked at college recruiting forms and most want you to select a position. She hasn't actually completed one cause she doesn't know what to put.

One of my son's high school teammates from the 2013-14 season had pretty much always played goalie coming up in both school and high-level club (including playing at Disney Showcase). The school coach switched him to center-back for senior year. From talking with his dad, some of the college coaches they had talked to wanted their keepers to have field experience to better understand what else is happening on the pitch.
He is now attending and playing keeper at an excellent Division III college in Indiana.

If possible I think any keeper should be playing in the field as well, at least up through age 14-15 (if not later). A team of high school age players should be comfortable playing the ball back to the keeper to maintain possession, and having keepers spend time in the field will help their skills.

Thanks. You are kinda backing up my thoughts. I think she would probably be more attractive if a coach could put her anywhere.
I just find a lot of forms want you to specify a position. Even ODP tryouts divide them by defender, midfield, and forward which surprised me. I thought they would have looked for technical ability over position .

Many have a secondary position slot on those forms. But my thoughts have always been that well-rounded utility players are valuable. Unfortunately, my daughter was pigeon-holed early. But we've always worked to make her well-rounded.
In our neck of the woods, traditionally, players have been pigeon-holed early, hampering their ability to learn the game as completely. It's getting better, though.

Remember Hope Solo was a forward until she went to college and became a keeper. Playing multiple positions can only help her understanding of the whole game.

We talked more and I think her coach said something to her that she was probably the only one on team that he could put in any position and she would not only be willing but understand the position. It made her feel good about things.
She is beginning to doubt about playimg in college anyway as her current plans include medical school. I told her it's up to her and there will probably be intramurals and recreational co-ed adult league.
