The Confederations Cup playoff game between the US and Mexico, which CONCACAF has confusingly decided to name the "CONCACAF Cup", will take place on Saturday, October 10, in the Rose Bowl. I'll start a thread here so we can talk about it.
Some good news for the US, as Mexican captain Andres Guardado broke his ankle in a Champions League match and will be unable to play in the playoff match. We need all the help we can get with the way we're playing, so every little advantage helps.
I'm not confident, but we always seem to get up for the Mexico games.

Here's what I think we can expect
GK Tim Howard LB Beasley CB Besler CB Cameron RB Fabian Johnson LM Zardes CDM Jones Free Mid Bradley CAM Dempsey RM Bedoya ST Altidore
I'd rather a 442 with Dempsey and altidore up top and yedlin in for Bedoya but I don't think JK will do that. Hopefully Bedoya has learned how to play like a man and not get shoved off every ball. The back line in my prediction is no doubt our strongest. And let's be real here: we all feel more comfortable when Timmy is in goal.
If we lose... JK out....Ancelotti in!

Bedoya came down with a severe illness during camp in the last few days, so Jurgen had to call Bobby Wood into camp at the last minute to replace him, so he has an almost 0% chance of playing tomorrow. I guess Yedlin and Zardes will start on the wings.
Also, despite what I said in my first post, it seems Andres Guardado somehow made a miraculous recovery from his broken ankle in just a few weeks and will start tomorrow.
Also doubt Howard will start over Guzan tomorrow, even though 99% of US fans think he should. Nothing against Brad, it's just that Timmy has been our team leader forever. He's won many big games for us.
I hope the back four you listed is what happens. I swear, my head might explode if Klinsmann starts Ventura Alvarado again tomorrow. He hasn't started in like two months for Club America. No way Omar Gonzalez should have been left at home.

Mexico wins 3-2 with a goal in the 118th minute by Paul Aguilar. Fair result. We didn't even deserve to score twice or make it to extra time. Mexico should have buried us.
Another putrid performance. I'm genuinely worried about World Cup qualifying now. We're not beating anyone playing like that.
Won't be surprised if Jurgen is fired tomorrow, but I don't think it would even help at this point. Our players are just not good enough. Not even the best coach in the world could make this group of players good.
Don't even get me started on Dempsey. Was he even playing? Sure didn't seem like it.

Horrific. Dempsey shouldn't put on a USA jersey ever again if he's not willing to actually try. It's as if he was payed off to not play well. His effort is abissmal. Altidire was ok. Zardes did what we could have asked him to. Geoff Cameron was the best player for the U.S. hands down. He was the only one out there who didn't seem afraid of the other team. But when your best player is a center back where do goals come from? Bobby wood is the next drogba Yedlin was good but I wish he would have just run around people more. Bradley's creativity in the middle was a C+. His finishing? F Beckerman once again posed absolutely no offense threat. Where was the defensive width!?!? Beasley was iffy a lot but had a few good runs and offensive plays. Besler solid Fabian Johnson wasn't the RB he was at the World Cup. Lost the ball a lot and didn't get forward enough. Where is the offensive creativity? The defensive desire? The overall intensity? Guzan needs to come off his line and get the ball more.
Just a terrible performance. I genuinely want JK to be fired as coach. Sure let him continue as technical director if he wants but please let's get a coach with some tactical know how. It seems like all he ever tells the players to do is to try harder. New coach NOW.
Oh and if you live in a country... Cheer for it
That is all.

Bobby Wood and Geoff Cameron were the only two good performances.
This team won't scare anybody. We maybe had 25% possession, and that's being generous. Just putrid passing.
Today will go down as one of the worst days in US Soccer history, when combined with the shocking loss to Honduras by the U23s.
This whole US Soccer program is a failure right now, at least on the men's side of things. There is no excuse for this.

Jurgen has sent Fabian Johnson home today after a heated conversation concerning Fabian's request to sub out during the 111th minute of the Mexico game (which was our last sub). I guess Fabian could have told him he was tired during the extra time break, but does Jurgen honestly not expect our defenders to get exhausted after defending attack after attack for almost the whole game because we can't keep the ball for 5 seconds?
If what I hear is true, and he had our guys doing three-a-days all week again to prepare for the game, than he and our entire fitness staff needs to be fired immediately. I can't think it's a coincidence that every single US player looked exhausted like 25 minutes into the match. Even Michael Bradley, who is well-noted around the world for his incredible stamina, looks exhausted every time he plays for the US. We used to be one of the fittest teams in the world, now we can barely go 90 minutes. What the heck is Klinsmann doing to those guys in training?
I have to think sending one of our best players home for such a petty reason will cause Jurgen to lose the locker room if he hasn't already. I almost hope we lose tomorrow so we can be done with this clown. I don't care if he's won a World Cup. He's lost the plot and all of the momentum we had been building for the last 2 years in gone. There are plenty of soild coaches out there who would gladly take his spot, make millions, and live in Beverly Hills.
Mexico went from a joke to a solid team again in just 2 years. We can do the same if we act now.

Professional players shouldn't be asking to leave games. Especially such a big game like this. These games show who the mentally tough are. If Johnson felt he was truly in danger of pulling a muscle again then so be it. But if he was simply tired then he does need to rethink his approach to the game. He wasted a critical sub. Nick Rimando was supposed to come in for the shoutout that was possibly going to happen.

Monchengladbach have reported that Johnson has a thigh injury. Johnson pulling himself is therefore justified and JK was too harsh

Absolute crap. Is Danny Williams a pro soccer player? His touch tells me no. Fire JK. Now. Bobby wood and lee Nguyen were the only players who tried to take anyone on. Alvarado and orozco should never feature for the U.S. again. Zardes has a worse touch than my grandma. Germain jones simply isn't good anymore. Fire JK and bring in a generation of young players who like to do more than pass it backwards.

Welcome to US soccer. This is what US soccer has been preaching for years. The definition of possession means backwards and side to side. We are promoting fast athletes, not soccer players. Our players, with a couple of exceptions, are so tactically naive, that all they do is run away from the ball. The USMNT is a poor example to the younger generation.

I've defended JK in the past, but at this point I think it's time for him to go. I give him credit for his recruiting prowess, but he isn't getting the results on the pitch and I doubt the locker room supports him. Let's move on, even if it means having an interim coach for our next two WCQ matches.

First time in 50 years we've gone winless in 4 straight CONCACAF matches. Absolutely unacceptable.
Not even our worst American managers messed up that badly. I'm really, really scared about WC qualifying now. We're collapsing as a team at exactly the wrong time. We might not even make the Hexagonal playing like this. It's really bad when you can't beat Costa Rica's B team at home.
