The Navy women's soccer team is tied 0-0 at halftime against Stanford, ranked #5 in the country preseason (and actually Top Drawer Soccer's preseason #1). This is Navy's season opener at home in Annapolis, and next year they go to Stanford to kick off their season. Former Ben Franklin and Louisiana Fire teammates Eleanor Pratt and Cadie Higginson came on as substitutes for Navy with roughly 20 and 10 minutes left in the first half respectively, finishing the half together in center midfield. For anyone who wants to watch live, as I'm doing from Brazil, the game is being streamed by the Patriot League Network! campusinsiders.com/network/patriot_league/live/womens_soccer_stanford_at_navy_08192016

Final score Stanford 2-1 Navy
Overall Stanford definitely had more possession during the game but there were very few clear-cut chances for either side....I was actually pleasantly surprised at how well Navy kept Stanford in check and limited them to long shots on many occasions. However Stanford eventually took the lead with a header on a corner kick and then doubled it with 15-20 minutes left. Eleanor came on with roughly 27 minutes left in the game and then Cadie about 5 minutes later, playing in center midfield together for a decent chunk near the end.
But despite Stanford opening the 2-goal lead, Cadie Higginson pulled one back and scored her first goal for Navy! A good cross game in from the wing and Cadie did great to beat her marker and get a touch past the keeper from close range. The keeper got a touch but couldn't keep it out. Very good positioning and determination by Cadie to be able to capitalize. Unfortunately Stanford was able to kill the end of the game pretty effectively with some calm possession that ate a lot of clock.
Overall I thought E and Cadie both did very well in midfield against a Stanford team overwhelmingly predicted to be a national title contender, E very clean and crisp in her possession/passing and won a couple fouls, and Cadie immediately demonstrating her trademark energy and determination that was eventually rewarded with a quality goal. Respectable result for Navy for sure. You can see that Navy seems a bit overloaded in central midfield, with at least 6 legitimate contenders for the midfield spots and the coaches doing a lot of midfield rotation. Defense also looked stable against a strong Stanford team.
Next up for Navy is TCU on Sunday, also in Annapolis.
