So... I had an interesting offside situation occur a couple of weeks ago. I would appreciate a clarification.
A defender clearly has possession of the ball and tries to clear it. Attacker A jumps in front of the clearance and the ball deflects to Attacker B who was in an offside position the whole time. Offside was called.
Was this the correct call if Attacker A never had possession of the ball?

Correct decision. Offside is judged when the ball is last touched by a member of his team, whether deflected or not. The only thing that "negates" this is a deliberate play by a defender. Example - long ball sent from A6 to A9, and A9 is in the offside position. B7 tries to head it, the ball skims off his head to A9. This is not offside.
A deflection does not "negate" offside. If A6 tries to pass to A9 in the offside position, but B6 is a yard away and the ball is deflected, and A9 receives it, A9 is offside.
Does this help?
