There's a list of what LSA requires here: www.playlouisianasoccer.org/about/how_to_become_an_lsa_affiliate/Setting up a Louisiana non-profit isn't too terribly complicated. But knowing a lawyer who can help you with the paperwork would be nice. I don't know the exact costs, but it's not that high. Getting 501c3 status is more complicated, but that doesn't need to be done right away. I'd imagine that getting the fields would be the most difficult part.

I believe there is a clause in LSA policy that a new member organization has to have a Rec league registered through Lsa for 2 years before it can start competitive soccer, you must also maintain 75 players throughout the process to stay eligible. It's Lsa's way of protecting the existing clubs

Exactly. Those rules are in place to discourage competition and to allow the cash cow to keep feeding. God forbid some new coach/club comes along and can increase the level of play and win a state championship from one of the big 4

Does anyone know if it is required to be a part of LSA to compete in tournaments and in scrimmages? I want to start a travel team in our area (nearest club team is 70 miles away). Where I'm from you just put together a group of players and pay a tournament fee or a league fee and you're good to go.

Tournaments require you to be a member of some type of US Soccer affiliated organization. The same would be true for scrimmages as the insurance to cover participants is the key

It says recreational teams could play. Rec teams are still under Lsa and it’s insurance. The other option is a US Club affiliation. Not sure what is all involved in that but I’m sure they have a website

You might be able to find a club that may allow you to register players under them to use their LSA membership for a nominal fee.
Otherwise, check out US Club Soccer although I hear their insurance is not as good. LSA has excellent supplemental insurance if a player gets hurt. It pays what your insurance doesn’t cover less a &500 deductible. It wasn’t too hard to deal with either. Thankfully we only had to use it once.

You may be able to start a rec program and register through LSA. Technically my daughter’s travel team is rec in that we didn’t go tryouts. Many of our girls have played on select teams in the past and went this route for various reasons- financial, less time commitment, not interested in playing at next level, friendship. We play in tournaments in Louisiana and ‘Mississippi. To my knowledge, our manager has never had issues getting us into tournaments.

64 miles to be exact! I'm currently working to get it affiliated with LSA. We'll be playing soon, hopefully. Still need some guidance as to which tournaments we can register and teams to play if anyone would like to send some suggestions my way!

Are you going to have a girl’s team or just boys? One thing you might want to try to get friendlies is talk to surrounding clubs and let them know you would like to play traveling opponents after league games. It would allow them to get another game in after traveling. You may be able to play the local team too.
If you are Rec, you can probably enter the Open Cup in Baton Rouge. Getting into tournaments isn’t hard but it can be difficult to find tournaments that have older age groups at an appropriate competition level. It’s kind of hit or miss depending on who goes. We have played same tournaments and competed well one year and got blown out of the water the next.

If you have any contact info you could send my way that would be great! I don't care about the competitive level though to be honest. Tough is good!
