Last night, I was coaching my boys varsity team. One of our players received a card within the first 10 minutes after a foul call.
The opposing player who was fouled stood over my player for a second and then left. My player got up, knocked the ball about 3 feet back to where the foul occurred and started getting prepared for the next play. The referee shows a yellow card after, which I have no problem with.
My only concern was what the yellow card was for. I wasn't sure if he was calling it for the initial foul or knocking the ball away (didn't really knock it away). I wanted to know so that I could rectify the situation on the bench to tell the player that he shouldn't do that (whatever it was) again.
I tried asking one of the dual officials who issued the yellow card why the player received a yellow card in a very polite manner. He refused to acknowledge my question. After asking a few more times, he said he didn't have to answer me and ignored me for the rest of the half. Thinking that he may not have fully understood my question, I asked the opposing coach if he could ask him in Spanish. When he asked, he said the exact same thing back in Spanish.
At half time, I approached the other referee, and he said it was for persistent infringement. I don't agree that that was what the original referee called, as it was the first foul call of the entire game, but whatever. I at least got an answer.
My question: Isn't a referee obligated to tell the coach what an infraction was for? Again, I can honestly say that I wasn't arguing or being a jerk. I genuinely wanted to know.
