There are officials' organizations in each metro area. Each of those organizations has an assignment secretary. The school makes a contract with an organization, then the secretary assigns officials to games.

If your question is more along the lines of how to be a HS referee:
1) An excellent place to start is by getting USSF certified and working club games to gain experience 2) Register with LHSAA (around September) 3) Take the online clinic (early October) 4) Take the online exam (early October) 5) Buy uniforms (before the rush)
There are 9 areas - Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Hammond, New Orleans, Houma. If you’re interested in more I can get you in touch with the right people in your area and we can go from there.

Are the officials supposed to travel outside of their “normal” working area?

Are the officials supposed to travel outside of their “normal” working area? Officials register with one of the nine associations. During the season, they are not restricted to a single area. Example, I register in Houma and work my fair share of games there. But my office is in Baton Rouge and I also work games in that area. I typically work for whoever assigns me first. Playoffs, you must work with the association you register with. So although I work a ton of games with the Baton Rouge group, right now I am tied to the Houma group and must work playoffs with the Houma group. The only exception is if for example New Orleans can only send three refs to a playoff in Houma, we can use a local official as the 4th official. Does this help any?

I forgot an important part of my question “during playoffs” but you covered it sir. THX

One more small important point - coaches agree on the association to be used for their playoff game and sometimes agree on the exact referee. Except finals - the referees for finals are chosen individually.
