We only lost because of the referees!
I think it was in high school that we were taught to lead with an attention-getter. Did it work? Great. It wasn't the referees . . . it was that WHO DAT Newman that beat us!
The first half was fairly even. Obviously our game plan was to defend it out and take our chances on counters and set pieces. We mis-cleared one ball in the box and Newman (I think #9) calmly side-footed the volley far post side-netting from maybe 10 out - composed, classy finish. But we did get chances.
Second half was much more Newman. Truth be told, we didn't have our best game . . . but our keeper was pretty amazeballs! Newman had a lot of decent chances, but we managed to keep it at 0-1. And in the end, we really should have tied it up -- we had 3 really good chances in the dying moments, including one right on the WHO DAT doorstep (maybe 2 yards out) that we managed to put right in the keeper's arms.
Like I said, it wasn't our best night and Newman is scary good.
Their field is one of a kind -- cool, very tight atmosphere with the fastest pitch in the west.
Can't say enough how proud I was our squad this year. After losing 13 seniors and a majority of a starting lineup, these boys overachieved all season. Finishing at 15-4-2, these guys only gave up 10 goals across 21 games. And 7 of the 10 were before Dec. 15, including 3 in the first 2 games of season (2 to UHigh and 1 to Neville), 2 in COPA (1 to Benton (PK) and 1 to Haynes (PK)), 1 to Pineville (PK), and 1 to Natchitoches Central (own goal). And after that PK goal to Pineville on December 14, the boys didn't lose again until last night at Newman (a little over 2 months), while giving up 3 goals over its last 13 games (including the one last night).
I know
gallstar wanted us to play more top flight games, but it's a delicate balance: we opted for less total games with a sprinkling of higher level games (University, Neville, Pineville, Northlake, Country Day). It's tough with a large district schedule to play those reach games when it's your 3rd or 4th game in a week -- last season, we played too many reach opponents and never clicked; didn't want the same for this year.
Yes, I digressed into the "man, we had a decent season" diatribe . . . Newman was class. I haven't see Christ Episcopal play but I've seen everyone else still in it. Newman is the favorite in my book. Not that that really matters . . . because we were in it last night!
Love my team. Can't wait for next season. With only 2 seniors graduating and us starting an 8th grader for most of the year, we'll be back.
Peace, see y'all in Hammond! Margaritas are on
DocT and
gallstar (and especially
Canescoach - yeah, I still remember, Adrian!).
