First off, congrats to UHigh on the win. They had an effective game plan and executed it given the conditions. It was unfortunate that the wind had such an effect on the game (for both teams). They played very direct from the back and were more aggressive than we were in the air and that made things difficult for us. We struggled to keep the ball on the ground and connect passes and they were well organized defensively, as they have been all year. Having watched the replay of the foul that resulted in the goal, it was a ridiculous call for obstruction on a throw in that bounced 10 yds over both players heads while my defender was moving with the ball as it was going to roll out for a goal kick. The attacking player was not even making a true effort to get the ball. Having been in these games a few times over the years, I have come to accept that you are going to get what you get and it can't be an excuse. I thought the center inserted himself into the game several times for things that were not necessary, but in the end we did not score so we lost. Not a fan of the venue this year in terms of the proximity of the fans to the field. I know we all want to be close to the action but if that is going to be the case, you have to supervise the fans. I had several players that were told to go to hell, your a ho, etc and I would imagine there were things that shouldn't be said from our student section as well. Add the parent that had to be escorted out by the police at the end of the game and it just takes away from the celebration for both teams and a few people ruin it for everyone. I expect and somewhat understand it from the students and think it is an important lesson to be able to perform under pressure in a hostile environment. To my team, we only had four players that started in last years final return this year. We graduated ten players and five all state players and jumped up a division as well. So many players contributed and stepped up this year to get us back to the finals. I am proud of what we accomplished despite all the questions entering the season. To my four seniors this year, you played in three finals in your four years despite being from N. LA and not many players can say that. You have raised the bar tremendously and set a great example of how to compete, win with pride, lose with class, and put your whole heart into something. Nothing is free, nothing is given, and you have earned everything you have. This will serve you well in life. Thanks to our students, faculty, staff, and parents for a great year. Four and a half hours away and we still killed it in terms of support. Loyola is an awesome place to be! See you next year! Well said. You are one of the few coaches at the club or school levels that gets it. Congrats on yet another great year.

"...on a throw in that bounced 10 yds over both players heads..."
I wasn't at the game, but that's some type of bounce off of a throw-in no less. As a non-objective observer of this post, this seems to be a bit exaggerated when trying to picture in my mind what the play really looked like when the call for obstruction was made.
That being said, it sounds like you did a great job coaching your girls this season. Congrats on a very successful season!

What I meant was the ball bounced and once it went over their heads it went past them by 10 yards...it was going to roll out for a goal kick. Not that it bounced 10 yds high over their heads...yes that would be a substantial bounce in terms of height. I'm assuming you meant an objective observer. Interesting note...the obstruction call is of course indirect, with the crowd noise and wind it was very difficult to communicate. The goal only stood because of the deflection off the keeper as no 2nd attacking player touched the ball. The actual play was shown a couple different times on the news coverage of the game by the Baton Rouge outlet etc. I'm not going to post any video here as it does not change the outcome nor LA officiating. A few years ago I made the mistake of posting video in an attempt to start discussion and dialogue on foul recognition and it looks like nothing more than being a sore loser. We all have our opinions and interpretations...I did not say that is why we lost the game. We lost because the final score was 1 for them and 0 for us. The end.

I watched it. I've seen that not called at every level of soccer. During the CL-Mt Carmel broadcast Coach Deritter was lamenting the obstruction rule and how it should be tossed from the rule-book because it's never called. Maybe there will be a rebirth now.

Video LinkYea, that's a real weak call in a state championship game. Obstruction is probably the worst called foul in high school soccer. We've played against teams who outstretch their arms doing the same thing that the Loyola player did there and get away with it consistently. I've tried to correct my players from doing that considering we had a penalty called against us last year for obstruction in a district match. Good on Coach to take that on the chin; have to score to win, but having a goal scored off of that call is definitely frustrating. Congrats on both teams for the great seasons.

Loyola did not lose because of that foul call.
