The classic #1 vs. #2 is upon us as both teams held serve. All the home field advantage stuff is over and done with for this season. The super bowl of games will be in Hammond this year. It’s always exciting for me to look back on what a team has done and then try to project what may happen. U. High was good at the start but left me feeling iffy. Then I watched them at the Copa, and I felt a little better. Then I watched them vs. St. Michaels, Parkview and North Vermillion. Each time I watched, I was finding new parts and pieces that I liked. My favorite part has evolved, and it’s their front 5 to 6 that attack. I’ll not waste time trying to remember all the numbers but will merely say they can send 5 to 6 players forward, and all of them can run past most defenses. They have a few exceptional individual players, and by exceptional, I’m talking tops in the state. #14 for Uhigh is a quality player as is the other mid #5. They round out this attack and have been extremely creative each time I’ve watched a game. Where I think Uhigh Could be lacking is in the patience department. They remind me of a basketball team like the Running Rebels of UNLV or The Running Green Wave of the early ’90s. Get the ball and go to the basket. When a team keeps the ball away from them and has speed and athleticism in the back to match up, they’ve struggled. The two teams that had size and speed in the Back that gave them the most problems were Jesuit and Byrd. Both these teams could possess reasonably well also.
Vanderbilt is a deep and well-balanced team. They can play possession, direct, and they can create chances off set pieces. Their size is above average, and I think they remind me of a great deal of Byrd from the D-1. Vanderbilt is a big strong physical team that can posses. Notice what I’ve done here. I picked UHighs worst game which was Byrd and I plugged in Vandy as Byrd. Why would Gallstar do such a thing? The worst game of the season for Vanderbilt was vs Lafayette. Why was this such a tough match up for them? My take on the match was Lafayette’s front 5 or 6 was to fast for the defense of Vanderbilt and the team in D-1 that Uhigh reminds me the most of is Lafayette. This means that both teams have strengths that are in direct conflict with the other teams weaknesses. Both of their worst outings were against a team very similar to the next one they will face.
Gallstar feels like two things will determine this next game. Goal keeper play and senior leadership. This tilts Gallstar a particular direction, and I believe both teams know the direction I’m leaning. The great senior leaders of Vandy and the best goalie I’ve seen this year will get Gallstar s vote.
Gallstar picks Vandy 4-2

Vandy vs Uhigh for the final. This will be a good one these teams had played in Copa and tied 1-1, a pk for each team. Vandy was missing 3 starters when they played tho. Vandy will only be missing one senior for the state game. Vandy is coming off an impressive 4-0 shutout win over Loyola. They look very lethal. My prediction for the game is 2-0 Vandebilt wins.

Going to be a great game. Think the difference maker is actually Vandy keeper. Both teams create chances but Vandy keeper the match winner. 2-1, Vandy. Good luck to both teams. Both are class programs that showed us a ton of hospitality this year.

The game will be higher scoring in my opinion. U.high plays a very open style. This will be a tactical difference between the two sides but opens the game up for more scoring.

The reason I think it will be low scoring is Uhigh will want to win but I can see Vandebilt putting in 2 good goals and Vandy keeper keeping a clean sheet. No goals on vandy keeper in playoffs and Vandebilts defense will support him and the offense will get the job done I think.

I still think it will take three goals by either side to win this game. U.highs front 5-6 will create many chances, and other than one or two games all year, they've put up two goals. I've watched both teams over four games each this year, including the head to head. That game at 1-1 will be 100% different. The Uhigh side found their best formation and style later in the season. I would be shocked at any number less than 3 We are winning this game. The size of the State championship field will be Bigger than the small cop a field. More space opens a game up tremendously.

I agree Vandys strong backline refuses shots on their keeper anywhere inside the 18 majority of shots on their keep is from atleast 18 yards out. Midfield also gets in on defending. Dangerous group. Will be a nail biter.

Gallstar recognizes the key weaknesses in which both teams put forth against the other. I’ve widened my view and absolutely have no clue who will win. Should be an excellent game! Looking forward to sitting in the stands. TAout

I think it will be a good match up. I think the goalie and the back line of Vandebilt will be difficult to play against. Vandebilt has gotten better throughout the year and in the end will be to much for U high to over come.
Vandebilt 3-1

Wonder how Uhigh is going to prepare for this game. All they have seen is straight dominance in the playoffs from vandy. Uhigh also doing a lot of dominating themselves. This game will be live streamed on a big platform I’m assuming? Anyways goodluck to both sides!

Prior to 2015-2016 season, Vandebilt and Uhigh were in different divisions and did not play each other very much. In 2015-2016 season, both were now in D III, but only played each other in an early tournament game with VC winning 1-0. A bicycle kick goal by VC player was the difference in otherwise tight, physical and competitive game. Both teams lost in the semi-finals that year.
In 2016-2017, VC and Uhigh actually played in a regular season game with VC winning at home 2-1. Yet another physical and competitive game. Both teams lost in the quarterfinals that year with VC having the No. 1 seed and falling to Episcopal and UHigh falling to Bolton.
In 2017-2018, VC and Uhigh did not play each other during the regular season, but met in the semifinals in a 2 seed Uhigh v. a 6 seed Vandebilt. Highly intense and physical game at night in Baton Rouge. VC scored early on throw-in header (Clinton Erny to Matt Rotolo). Jack Shelby scored for Uhigh to tie it up (Shelby's mom is a VC grad) in the second half. Rotolo scored again on a long free kick with a tip in near the goal as the ball never touched the ground. VC ran out the clock and broke the hearts of Uhigh players and fans. VC went on to beat EDW in State Championship.
Last year, Uhigh bounced back big time and beat VC 2-0 in a tournament game in route to their first state championship.
Earlier this year, the teams met at Copa and tied 1-1. Neither team was at full strength and both have changed much since then. Of course, that game was very physical and very competitive with about equal possession. Both teams scored on PKs.
Now the stage is set: the state champions in DIII from the last two years now play for this years state title. This year, a different Erny and different Rotolo look to repeat what their brothers accomplished. This year, Coach Mitchell has the monkey off of his back and will have his team playing at their peak performance. This year, we have a 1 v. 2 matchup and clearly the best two teams in DIII (likely two of the top 4 in all divisions). Like all of the previous matches, this game will be highly competitive, very physical and close. It will a cold night in Hammond on Wednesday, but the emotions (and bourbon for parents only) will keep it hot. It is sure to be epic.

Gallstar forgot one small detail. Tornado power! Since there is only one team with a tornado I've got to go with Uhigh.
Cubs win 3-2
