Congratulations to both teams! A fluke deflection is a really tough way to lose a State Final.

Congratulations to both teams! A fluke deflection is a really tough way to lose a State Final. it doesn’t matter how they’re scored it just has to cross completely over the line. HC was pounding for the prior 10 minutes and it was just a matter of time. Luck supported by skill is always appreciated.

Yes. That’s correct. STM was unlucky not to score in the first half. STM dominated HC the first half. It was truly a tale of two half’s. I beg to differ however, that a deflected own goal isn’t a cruel way to lose. If you don’t know that, maybe you’ve never played a big final as a player.

To me the shot was on frame and had a decent chance of a goal itself, I think the keeper read the shot and got a good line on it. Just that the attempt to defend caused it to shift path. It’s not as pretty as the curling rip in an upper 90 but they all count the same. In the attackers mind that goal is 100% his. And in the defenders mind it is 100% his fault.

Holy Cross is a dynasty. Made it the last 4 out of 5 years, and they have won 3 in a row. Dynasty

71' STM and HC collide heads in the box, HC gets the worst of it, he's down. HC parents don't like it at all. He's still down, it didn't look good in real time. We have 9:12 left on the clock. Coach Millet talking with the ref it's pretty civil or at least looks it. Now the player is up and about HC 40. Referee 100% correct with stopping the play right away for an injury like that. Now a drop ball. HC abandons their cries for a card and we're back in play I am calling fake news here, pulling T2R reporter card. Used 3 words never previously found in same sentence - Millet, Ref, and Civil. Seriously, do hope the player is well. Congrats Matt and HC staff. Ummm, I’m always civil when chatting with an official. 🤷♂️

I agree the First half possession was 60/40 to StM. But unlucky not to score? That’s quite a shout. I don’t remember a shot on target. If “keeping the ball and playing diagonal balls” is “should have scored”, I guess you are right. Best chance of first half was HC corner headed right next to the post just wide. Second half was rammed down St M throat. Chance after chance after chance. Should have been 3/4 scored.

Couple of notes here. 1. The goal was a fluke goal that deflected off of a defender and went in. The goalie would have stopped it had the defender not touched it. The shot was not great and was outside of the box by about 10 yards if I recall. That said.... it went in and you have to shoot to win. Kudos to the shot taker. 2. STM dominated and when I say that I mean dominated the first half. Shots were taken but not many. They came out so flat in the second half that I wondered just what the heck they did on the way up:). That could have been the ride up, big stage, watching the girls win, or the dominate holy cross team. Just hard to say but I can tell you that STM did not look like STM in the second half. Again maybe that was the competition and level of play. 3. The right winger for HC took over the game in the second half and was too much to handle for about 10-15 minutes and that was the true difference. 4. Great win for HC and true dominance of the division for the last three years.

Oh boy, these comments... STM is a great team that got beaten by another great team, that's championship soccer. Fluke goal? Nope. Spend the $11 and watch the video. I've played in and watched my share of games and lived through now two sons playing championship soccer at Holy Cross. As the Dad of HC's freshman GK, I can tell you that I was never stressed in last night's match as I watched my young son mind the box. Granted, he had the luxury of a perfectly staffed and organized defense in front of him. That is not to say that STM wasn't a great team last night. Both defenses ran the game until our speedster (MVP) on the right cracked things open in the 2nd half and created the smallest amount of space on the left for the goal scorer to do his thing. The NFHS stats (not official as far as I know) from the first half showed each team with exactly one (1) shot on goal. At that point, I think we all envisioned at least OT. I'll have to go back and check for the second. Realitycheck is exactly right, we missed opportunities in the 2nd act that should have stretched the net at least a couple more times. The STM GK was a stud and thwarted a couple of great shots and we just missed a couple others. HC put the STM defenders on their heals in the 2nd and the goal was going on frame and the well-intended defender's deflection took away the GK's chance to get a hand on it. That happens at every level and is never considered an OG - or a fluke. Call it what you want, I call it soccer. HC was tested by strong teams in tight games throughout the playoffs and that finely honed mental fortitude was the difference in my mind. It takes some luck to win any title at any level. Luck favors the prepared and our gritty playoff run helped put some in our pocket. Hats off to STM, be proud of a great season and a great game.
A quick word about the venue: As a spectator, I liked it better than Laffy the last two years - and I liked that place & field a lot. The dimensions are right for the game and only natural grass would make it better. Lastly, a shout out to El Paso. They graciously accommodated about 40 HC parents and fans with pre-game nachos and margarita's to get our championship party started. The live band and dancing was great, too!
Adios muchachos, te veo el próximo año!
