Has either team lost this season?

Has either team lost this season? Mandeville 9th team went 10-1-1 this year only losing to a very good St Paul 9th team 1-0 and a 1-1 tie with Fontainebleau's JV team. Great group of 22 freshman this year at Mandeville.

St. Paul teams (9th grade and JV) allowed one goal the entire tournament (it was a penalty kick)! Pretty impressive!

St. Paul's JV has not lost or tied this season. We have only given up one goal so far (against Ocean Springs with the starting lineup on the bench after going up 4). We have 2 wins over Catholic and Brother Martin, and 1 win over Jesuit, Mandeville, Dutchtown, Lakeshore, Gulfport, Dunham, and University (I think that is it so far). We have 2 games left at BR High and Jesuit to end the season. We have been without some of our top players for a few of these games and I always rotate all of my players to allow every player game time, even in close games (though they got less time than normal in a couple of games). If you want to check out the future crop of talent for both schools, we play Jesuit at Jack Ryan Stadium to end the season on January 30, as do the 9th grade team. Times TBD.
I'm not 100% sure about the 9th grade team, but I think they may have 1 loss and/or tie. They are a talented group as well though. I look forward to coaching them next year.

Also, thank you to Coach Paul Fletcher, Dunham High School, Burbank Soccer Complex, and all of the referees for hosting this tournament and giving the boys some extra games! We enjoyed the event despite the frigid temperatures and got to get some good minutes in on the field. Look forward to coming back next year if Coach Moser decides to send us again!

SPS JV team is fun to watch and obviously very talented. That being said, Jesuit, Brother Martin, Catholic, and Dutchtown all have their top sophomores (and some freshman) playing varsity. Many of them are actually starting. SPS varsity roster shows 18 seniors & 6 juniors (per their website). I’d like to see those matchups played with all those freshmen/sophomores playing JV to get an accurate idea of what the teams will like like for the next couple of years. Ultimately, JV is supposed to be about getting players ready to play varsity. In most cases, I’d rather have a Sr with 3 or 4 years of varsity experience at the highest level over the Sr who played 2 or 3 years of JV.

You mean some teams are playing their best players regardless of classification??

No disrespect meant. I was just pointing out that the undefeated /unscored upon record wasn’t quite an apples to apples comparison of all the younger talent across the teams he mentioned. All of the best sophomores @ SPS play for their JV team. They aren’t playing for the teams they beat.

Not sure why some wouldn’t play their best on varsity but there does seem to be a “seniority” feel and “we have been here 2-3 years paying 20-25K/year and deserve to play” feel. Wasn’t it Catholic 2-3 years ago where it was alleged that their freshman team was as good as varsity?

I know last year Moser took one Sophomore to Varsity bc he definitely deserved to be there. I personally don't think the gap is large between the players on the JV team and the Varsity team but we do tryouts with all of them together and have scrimmages to give the Sophomores a chance at making the jump if they prove they are at the level. Usually, there isn't enough evidence to warrant it, imo. While I don't think the Juniors or top few Sophomores on the JV team would be a detriment to the Varsity team, I also don't think they would bring much to the table that isn't already in the team. Every year I have to get a few disappointed Juniors (and Sophomores) to deal with their disappointment and commit themselves to putting in the work to improve and prepare for the jump to varsity next year (assuming they make it then). Personally, I would love to see some of those top sophomores and juniors play against my JV team. If I was able to get games scheduled against some varsity teams to push the boys even more, I would gladly do so. I personally don't care about the record a ton since it is just JV and would welcome the greater challenge to further prepare the boys for the next level. We also always move a few of the JV boys who have done well through the season up to Varsity to train with them and help in the District/Playoff run. I don't think there is much of a "seniority" mentality really, there is just an abundance of talent so it's hard to break into the Varsity team. I'm sure it's similar at Catholic and Jesuit, as well as a few others.

This is only my third year in the program and I didn't play at the school (Ponchatoula 1999-2003), but there haven't been any Freshmen on JV or Varsity since I've been there. With the level of talent available and the typical gap in athleticism between Freshmen and Seniors/Juniors, I would say it's unlikely to happen any time soon. It may have happened in the past before St Paul's became the perennial powerhouse they are today though.

Colin Ross started as a freshman and I think holds the mark for most career starts at St Paul’s. During that time, the team reached the state final 4 times and won 3 times in 2014, 2015 & 2016.

6 of the current Seniors played on the varsity as Sophomores. It varies year to year.
