My thoughts from last nights game:
It was obvious to almost anyone, that it was Weah who was the difference maker last night, but the pairing on the right side with Musah was even better as Musah was able to link up with Weah all night by his handling of the ball in tight situations in transitions from defending to the attack. Weah was highlighted before the game for his ability to get behind defenders with his speed and this showed up from beginning to the end with Weah, but Mexico were unable from stopping him from getting the ball, because Musah was also dominating possession as well. Mexico had no one on the field to keep up with Musah and Weah, and then when Pulisic came on for Aaronsonn, they had no gas in the tank to stop them. That was why Mexico were losing their cool in the last fifteen minutes. The USA has put them under so much pressure and caused them to defend so much, that Mexico broke down in the end. On Thursday, ussoccer.com released footage of team USA practices playing small sided games. In that footage, you saw lots of one touch passing in that every player had their pass picked out before they received the ball and they kept that ball moving. This was exactly what the USA did in the opening moments, not allowing Mexican 1st defenders to close down on 1st attackers. As soon as a player received a ball for the USA, it was gone. Now, the USA did turn the ball over sometimes doing this with errant passes, but they stuck to their game plan and kept Mexico moving on their defense. If you tally USA scoring chances last night, most came from Weah’s side after we got the ball deep in their attacking third and corner.
Mexico had moments of brilliance when they played their long ball at the right moments. Their best chance came on a long pass that switched the side of play, yet as the game wore on, they didn’t go back to this enough. It was that kind of play that allowed them to beat Germany in the last World Cup. Since that Germany game, you see flashes of this play, but then Mexico goes back to that same style of Mexican play of the past of short pass possession. Mexico, needs to go back to that Germany game and look at last nights game as well as other and see how they broke down defenses by using that long ball after their typical short pass possession style. What I am saying is, they seem to be best when they know how to mix it up.

The tide has officially turned. Not only did we win, we dominated. First half was pretty back and forth but their second half was all USA. Our boys finally realized tonight that we have the better team. Our players are better than theirs. You could see the confidence from players like Musah and Weah going at defenders with the ball. It was beautiful. Mexico were playing scared. The looks on Chucky and Herreras faces were priceless. They had no idea what to do. And Ochoa, the luckiest goal keeper of all time, can now shut his mouth for good. Pulisic’s man in the mirror message was awesome. His instant impact is exactly what I was talking about in my post on the other thread. Gotta give some credit to Gregg today. Finally plays the right lineup and we dominate Mexico. Now let’s see what he does against Jamaica with McKennie and Robinson both serving suspensions…

Now let’s see what he does against Jamaica with McKennie and Robinson both serving suspensions… You and I have been spot on with our analysis all qualifying, because I believe what we see is obvious as well to anyone else that is watching. We are leading qualification, despite our young lineup, and despite losing a lot of starters, because our program is showing a lot of depth and that depth continues to show improvement every year as more and more of our players are breaking into European starting lineups. I have been telling people that we have a chance to win a World Cup in the next few cups as long as we do not get in our own way. We must win this next game in Jamaica, because we still have some tough away games to play at Costa Rica, Mexico, and Canada. A win Tuesday does not automatically qualify us, but if we lose, Mexico and Canada ties and Panama wins, we could be in the fourth spot. Jamaica are playing better and have gotten out of the cellar so they will not be easy. ConCACaf is rarely easy. We need to overcome our lineup issues and get some points on the road while we can.
