do the coaches take into consideration, not only the leadership of these players, but the unsportsmanlike conduct of many of these players by receiving straight reds? A player can be great, a player can be a good leader, but when you receive a straight red, you loose all respect from me. Especially when the player is a captain, what does that show to the under-class players..... a good leader? I don't think so.

however, it is absolutely ridiculous for chris hilario not to make the list at all. Over the years, I have made it a point to never comment on any player. As I make probably my last post to this board, I do want to concur with this opinion. Chris deserved the All State honor. The system has to change. I sincerely hope that it does.

Voting for the ONE best keeper in the state is ALWAYS going to bring an argument from someone. ALWAYS. I mean you are voting for ONE guy out of all the keepers in the state. HOW many people will actually agree with the pick? I saw Hilario in our game and saw him against St. Paul's in the playoffs. VERY SOLID keeper. I don't know if he was allowed to show himself as much as other teams' keepers were during the season, BECAUSE Caddo was so good all over the field...AS is reflected by the fact that they won STATE. CERTAINLY he was a HUGE part of that...however winning state doesn't mean everyone will agree he was the best keeper in the state. I think part of CADDO's success at not allowing goals was a combination of keeper, defense, AND the way the midfield controlled the ball and tempo of the game...giving a lot of teams less opportunities at goal...thus a team effort. That being said...that may be some reasoning why he wasn't selected. There are probably 5 guys that could all lay claim to All State keeper in Division I...ALL of them could make an argument....ALL of them would be worthy. The fact that Hilario wasn't selected shouldn't be a shock AND more importantly he should NOT take it as a "slap in the face"....I mean how many other keepers will have the RING on for this year's champions?

Actually pitchfanx2 I was not referring to Flowers b/c he did not receive the red card in the Caddo / BM game. It was Leblanc and Hilario that received the cards in that game. Hilario for taunting Leblanc during a PK and Leblanc for punching a players when he missed the PK. This was not what I heard but more what I OBSERVED!!
But since you brought up Flowers, he was classless screaming during the PKs. And this is the captains of both teams showing their leadership to the underclassman.

Voting for the ONE best keeper in the state is ALWAYS going to bring an argument from someone. Pitch, I love you man, but there were THREE keepers on the All State team, two of which were second team... Surely Chris deserved one of those three spots? Just my humble opinion. If, in succeeding years, you had Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior All State teams, I'm thinking you ought to be able to recognize 4 x 2 keepers per team = 8 keepers (12 if you had one 1st team and two 2nd team like this year). More spots = more deserving recognition. Why can't you break the teams out by class like that? Who says you can't? I guess you know what I'd say to anyone/entity that said you can't have age/class based teams. Yep, you're right! [BLEEP] ;D

having four all state teams (one for each year group) would cheapen the award for the likes of Mullins who has the potential to be three years of all state

It'd take a pretty intimate knowledge of a vast area of players to do that. The idea is good, but I don't think it's possible.

But that is, and never has been, the problem. The problem has been all the many other deserving players that get left out. Much is made about the fact that individual honors should take a back seat to team accomplishments. I agree with other posters that we could easily do away with them. But, it's part of our culture and we just have to accept it - and strive to find ways to improve the equity of the process. Ask Mullins: Would it make that much difference to him to be All State 3 years in his age division as opposed to 3 years in a combined age division? Would it make that much difference on his soccer resume/to a college recruiter? Would he be willing to make that trade IF more of his fellow players could receive the recognition they deserve?

It'd take a pretty intimate knowledge of a vast area of players to do that. The idea is good, but I don't think it's possible. Well, I don't know. Yes, on the face of it, it seems like it would be a lot of extra work. But, and here I'm guessing, it seems as though a big percentage of coaches at the high school level also coach club/premier. If so, you get to see players in a particular age group all year long - not just during high school. If that's so, the total population you have to evaluate is MUCH smaller - assuming, of course, that the most skilled players in high school play year round. (There may be the odd player who only plays in high school who could make the All State team, but it would be easy enough to identify this player who is unknown to you.) If you are a club/premier coach of a particular age group, then you can get names from your fellow club coaches in the other age groups. The player's club/premier jersey numbers will be probably different from the numbers they use in high school, but getting rosters from the high school refs or from LSA should be a fairly simple thing. All you would have to do is note the high school player's number, look his name up on the roster and then ask other coaches about him. You guys know these players. You see them all year. Figure it out. It can't be THAT difficult... If you can't even do that, then the award is watered down...and cheapened.
