I was under the assumption that if a player intentionally touches the ball with their hand in the box that it is an automatic red card, however is this true if the player intentionally touches the ball outside of the box. The only reason I ask is because twice I have seen players carded for swatting a ball inside the box (blatantly and intentionally) but if a goalie grabs a ball outside of the box it is just a kick. Could someone clear this up for me, please? or did I just answer my own question........

When the goalie picks up the ball outside the box, it is a direct free kick. If it is an intential pass back to him from his own team mate, it is an indirect free kick inside the box, no card.
A player receives a card for intentially handballing the ball if its a goal scoring opportunity. (They may recieve it even if it isnt as well.) However, if the ball is going directly into the goal, and a player intentially stop the ball with his/her hands, it is a red card.
Someone can clarify this just to make sure I am right?

PutMeInCoach2, you are correct but to add one thing. If the keeper comes out of the box and handles the ball and it is a goal scoring opportunity, this is also a red card offense.

Yes this is true. I have seen the intentional swat by the def, then a goal on the next play. The goal counted and no card given. It was a lopsided game with an inexperienced team, and the ref gave the def. a nice long speech. Good job ref.
