UEFA is experimenting with 5 officials this season in the Europa cup, with a view to using in the CL next season. Other than the logistics of assignors not having enough officials as it is, any thoughts?

You will not see this at the local level for a long, long time.

What will be the role of the 5th official? Are they looking at two in the middle? I find this will disrupt the rythm of play b/c of varying styles of officiating. Will one of them have ultimate authority?

the regular three on the field, plus one each at the corner of the 6 yard box, off the field. It covers the "blind" corners on the field where the more sneaky players exploit areas that are normally difficult to cover (see France v Ireland for example). It seems to have worked well in the Europa league, it will be in the Champions league next year and FIFA have said they are considering it for next summer.
