So here is what i've come up with using Flat's power rating from last year as a guideline.
What i've added was the FIFA ranking system which calculates strength of game, strength of team and strength of region. Thus giving games more meaning and strength.
There are three aspects to my ratings.
FIFA rankings + Style points + Strength of schedule = Total
FIFA RANKINGS
Ranking points = Match result X Strength of Game X Oppositions strength X Strength of regions
MATCH RESULTS
STRENGTH OF GAME
STRENGTH OF REGION
The multiplier used in the calculation is the average of the regional strength weighting of the two teams:
Regional strength multiplier = Team 1 regional weighting + Team 2 regional weighting/2
example: Jesuit's regional strength = 1. Vandebilt's regional strength = .90
1+.9 / 2 = .95
OPPOSITIONS STRENGTH
Obviously, a win against a very highly ranked opponent is a considerably greater achievement than a win against a low-rated opponent, so the strength of the opposing team is a factor.
The formula used is:
Opposition strength multiplier = 150 - ranking position/74.5
Example: 150 - 8 = 142/74.5 = 1.90
So let's add them all up to show you how this works.
Jesuit is the #1 ranked team in LA
Vandebilt is the #11 ranked team in LA
I think i've explained as much as I can. If you want to see the FIFA ranking system for yourself you can go here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifa_rankings
STYLE POINTS
The style point system is added to gauge which teams are dominating certain games. Therefore determining their actual strength against teams.
Example:
Opponents # of wins + Match results + Blow out factor + Shut out factor = Style points
Jesuit v. Woodlawn (4-1)
Woodlawn's # of wins = 11.5
Match result = 5
Blow out factor = 2
Shut out factor = 0
11.5 + 5 + 2 + 0 = 18.5
As the year plays out you will average out the style points throughout the year. Jesuit's style point average is 23.12 out of the 27 games they played. Highest in the state.
Now to add a twist to this equation I added the aggregate of goals scored to goals against. Jesuit had a final aggregate of 3.08. I added the final aggregate to the final average of style points.
23.12 + 3.08 = 25.20
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Strength of schedule equation. Real simple, just add the strength of opponents schedule with your win% and divide by 2.
Jesuit's strength of schedule is 6.22, their win % is 9.63.
6.22 + 9.63 / 2 = 7.92
The final equation:
Jesuit's final FIFA Ranking = 9.53
Jesuit's final Style Points = 25.20
Jesuits final Strength of Schedule = 7.92
9.53 + 25.20 + 7.92 / 3 = 14.22
WA-LAH!!!!
Now i will say the reason why the FIFA rankings average is so low. Is because all of the "strength of game" and "strength of region" multipliers weren't put into effect. They all were equal throughout the year at 1. Except for the playoffs. The "strength of game" multiplier was at 2 for everyone who made it to the playoffs and 3 for the Championship games. The reason is because it's only fair that all teams got an equal opportunity with a new system. Starting from ground zero. Next year all the aspects of the FIFA rankings will be put into effect.
Also, only games that are eligible are LHSAA games. If a Varsity plays a JV it doesn't count, even in a tournament. If a team plays an out of state team, no matter how good that team is, it will not count toward these ratings. Non-LHSAA teams(example: Ridgewood) aren't eligible. Only LHSAA eligible teams and games.
This is my personal rating system. I will still be doing flat's until another system is voted over it. I will be comparing the two throughout the year to see which one fares better.
Please give me as much feedback as possible. Thank you.
