You all keep putting down DIV1 players like they are for worse than premier players. Sorry but once you take the RPL teams out of premier there isnt much left. The caliber of players that are on the left over premier teams will be the same as on the bulk of the Div I teams. Now the premier team may still have an edge because they may have more of these players were alot of the DIV1 teams are forced to fill a roster with sub-par players.

"It is not a put down, but it is what it is. Like I said, I've had my kids in both levels, it is NOT the same, not even close."
Depends on where you ((r) kids) are playing......It is very close in some places. The best players are not always playing premier....kick ball is kick ball, even in premier.

I've witnessed kick ball in premier in La many times.

I'm an E Licensed coach that only helps out with a Premier team, and doesn't coach HS. But, here are some observations:
1. Coaches only have these kids for a short time, and practice time is limited by having to cram all the games in. It's tough to develop a player when you are not allowed the time for player development.
2. There are schools that can't afford to hire a separate coach for soccer, so they pull from the ranks of staff already in existence. So, you may have a gym teacher or football coach with little to no knowledge of the game coaching soccer. It is what it is, and they do the best with what they have in knowledge and what they're given.
3. Here in NW LA, the club players are concentrated at perhaps three, maybe four schools. As a result, coaches DO have to work at developing players during this short season. If we were loaded up with club players in all the schools, might not be as big a factor.
My thoughts are somewhat of a blend: You look for the kid that's always at practice giving you everything they have. You look for athleticism and coachability. You DO look for experience, but don't always place it super high on the list of priorities.
Strict player development comes at an earlier age, probably through U13. At 14, although still developing players, the focus becomes more about winning. Always developing and teaching, but the focus is readjusted the older they get.
At 43, I'm learning the game and wished it had been around where I grew up when I was a kid. My observations are just from what I've seen, paying attention to both the HS and Club sides of things.

Well, for those who may send hate mail, I'm not talking poorly about players who don't play all year. But something I've learned about soccer: skills perish very quickly. More quickly, perhaps, than most of the other sports. The kids that play only seasonally have to take time to reacclimate and that may take a couple of months of touches during the HS season to refresh some of that muscle memory.
We can always start a new thread regarding this topic (club players v seasonal players) but let's not get away from the original question.

Yes miraddydad, please start a thread on club players vs seasonal players. I would love to read all the opinions. I was just talking with a local soccer trainer and he said he says all highschool players should play club outside of HS

Let's see, club soccer trainer saying you should play club ball? HMMMMMM.. Not saying it isn't true, but kinda like asking a surgeon if you need surgery or medication, you generally get cut! (JKJKJK) :>

Griffdad I never said he was a club soccer trainer, I said he was a "local" trainer. He trains both highschool players and club players. Read what I said accurately. It is common knowledge that playing soccer all year around only makes you better. As miraddydad pointed out from his last comment. Soccer skills perish very quickly, only takes one month.

I was making (poorly) a joke. the more you can play/practice is always better.

I'm not insane. Now expect the hate mail from the mioptic...but then again, most of those are only coming on the site now to see if their princess has made all district... In addition to differences in skill, there's often a gap of experience between premier & D1. Skill is knowing how to perform a task. Experience is knowing what to do & when to do it.

As quoted from above blog....
"I understand that for each decision on playing time, positions, etc. there will be differences of opinion. Heck, there is probably a different opinion from each parent on the team for each position. If you have a question or suggestion about these things feel free to approach me after practice or away from the field. I am always open to listening. However, reality is that only one person can make the final decisions and that person is the head coach. I take this responsibility seriously and I will make those decisions I feel are best for the team."
We all know that "winning" is not everything; however, I have one question. Do you, as a coach, want your team to win? Yes? or No?
